I just found out a large solid septated mass on my right ovary that is assumed to have ruptured. Told I need a hysterectomy. Do I need a second opinio?

Need clarification: It is important to get clarification from your doctor on the diagnosis. A solid mass would not be ruptured. A cyst could rupture but it would not be solid. If it were ruptured it would no longer be visible on sonogram. A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus. This surgery would not address a problem in the ovary. An oophorectomy or cystectomy is the removal of the ovary or a cyst. ...Read more

I am 2.5 weeks post op (full hysterectomy except right ovary) - how long do I have to wait to have an orgasm without penetration?

Depends: Have you had a routine 2 week post operative check? If everything was normal at that visit then you can have an orgasm. Typically, doctors like to examine you 2 weeks after surgery to check for any problems (fevers, signs of infection). For a major surgery like you had, I usually recommend waiting 4 weeks before penetration intercourse. Masturbation/orgasm is fine now if you have no problems. ...Read more

I have had a hysterectomy, two years later I had left ovary removed due to cyst, at removal right ovary was but now right ovary has cyst?

Not a problem: Of course you don't want both ovaries removed at age 38 as that could harm your heart and bones. Cysts at age 38 are most commonly benign and doctor can perform a "cystectomy" rather than an "oophrectomy". Remove just the cyst if it causes pain or is of concern for the doctor, and leave the rest of the ovary. Unless strong family history ovarian cancer, then ovary should be spared at all cost. ...Read more

My right ovary was left after a hysterectomy keeps developing cysts. Tried to remove but its attached to bowel. Can the ovary be killed?

My right ovary was left after a hysterectomy keeps developing cysts. Tried to remove but its attached to bowel. Can the ovary be killed?

Try birth control: Ovaries are supposed to make cysts (follicles-that contain an egg) every month. Sometimes the cysts can grow too large or bleed when they open, causing pain. An easy way to treat this without surgery is to use birth control pills which suppress the ovaries and should help keep them from making cysts. ...Read more

I am 49/post menopausal, I have an 11cm cyst on my right ovary, CA-125 test normal. He wants full hysterectomy, I am unsure. Scared. Thoughts?

It depends!: There is some concern that a large cyst in the ovary can be or become cancerous. So removal is often advised. But if you prefer, you can be monitored with serial physical exam and Ultrasound examinations at 6 to 9 month intervals and delay surgery unless the cyst continues to grow or become more complex like showing solid components inside the cyst.. ...Read more

I've got a 4cmx4cmx3cm cyst with internal echoes on right ovary. Had cervical cancer 2 year ago and had hysterectomy. Is this bad?

Usually no: The echoes are commonly due to some bleeding into the cyst. It is reasonable to get another ultrasound in 6 months to recheck but the overwhelming likelihood is that this is not cancerous. These cysts also commonly go away on recheck. ...Read more

What treatment for painful post hysterectomy complex hemorrhagic bilateral ovarian cysts? Total of five cysts in right ovary & change in bowel habits

Ovarian Cysts: Hemorrhagic ovarian cysts can develop after uterine removal, or they can represent foci of endometriosis or merely retained corpora lutein cysts that become necrotic and bleed into them. Either way, the cysts don't usually burst, but they should definitely be evaluated by your gynecologist immediately, because they can be serious or even be harboring an ovarian tumor. See your gynecologist soon. ...Read more

6cm septated solid mass on r ovary. Told hysterectomy is needed. How long should I wait to seek second opinion? How urgent is it to act upon?

Seek Options: It's premature to schedule hysterectomy (removal of uterus) for a solid 6 cm ovarian mass. It may be benign (teratoma, cystadenoma, endometrioma, etc) versus malignant. Ultrasound can give info to grade these risks (nodules, septations types, etc) but cannot diagnose cancer. In fact, only tissue bx can DX cancer. Consider ovarian cystectomy vs oophorectomy, lsc vs open, & discuss with your gyn. ...Read more
