My husband noticed a hard lump on his left shin bone today. He is wondering what it could be. He has no pain, no specific injury remembered?

Should get X-ray: There are a number of reasons for bumps on bone, trauma is one, other causes are benign or malignant. Benign causes include endochondroma, osteochondroma, nonossifying fibroma, chondroblastoma, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, periosteal chondroma, giant cell tumor, and chondromyxoid fibroma. Malignant lesions in that age range include osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma or ewing's sarcoma. See a md. ...Read more

I have a rock hard lump on shin about halfway down my leg. Sort of feels attached to bone. What could cause this?

Periosteal hematoma: If you had some local blunt trauma to your shin, the periosteal coating that surrounds the bone ("hot dog casing") is injured. As it is very vascular, it will bleed and can bulge and create a lump or hematoma. If it does not subside over the course of days to weeks, you should be evaluated ...Read more

I have a hard painfull lump on my left leg very close to the shin bone. It hurts when I walk and also to the touch. It appeared suddenly.

See your Orthopod!: Sudden appearance of a painful & tender swelling in the leg could be due to a number
of causes. It could be from a fall or stumble resulting in a fx or torn muscle; or due to an infection. All these would be associated with a history of a trauma or fever, etc.
Rarer causes include a bone tumor breaking thru, resulting in sudden swelling, pain & tenderness.
Bleeding vessel might also cause the same. ...Read more

Hit my shin bone 4 weeks ago, it's still swollen and bruised. There's a large lump. Tender to touch. Only gets sore if use it to much?

Hit my shin bone 4 weeks ago, it's still swollen and bruised. There's a large lump. Tender to touch. Only gets sore if use it to much?

Bump is hematoma: The large lump is a common normal response to an injury over the tibia from blunt trauma. The bony lining or periosteum is very vascular and thus can bleed significantly leading to a local hematoma. The swelling should start to subside with rest, ice, decreased use and an ace wrap to provide compression and protection. ...Read more

I hit my shin (Tibia) 5 days ago, there is a lump on the bone with some bruising at the site, now there is bruising in my ankle could it be broken?

Aqua fur.: Anythings possible, but if bruising is the only issue, an ankle fracture is unlikely. The ankle bruising could be some blood and serum leaking between tissue planes and moving from the shin to the ankle area. To remove all doubt, have your ankle evaluated. ...Read more

I have a hard quarter sized lump on my right leg on the shin bone right above my right ankle on the tendon and I was wondering what this sounds like?

It could be: It may very well be a ganglionic cyst/ganglion. This is a common location for something like this. But there are other bony and soft tissue cyst/masses that could less commonly account for this. I would encourage you to have a physician evaluate this lesion to make sure it's not something more concerning. ...Read more

TV fell on leg and slid down shin bone. Was told it was a bruised bone. Now I have a hard movable lump in area that feels like scar tissue? Normal?

Yesterdays Cyst.: Sounds about right to me. The cyst of a few months ago is starting to thicken it's walls and firm up. It is taking up more space and starting to effect the surrounding tissues. Probably best to have it re-evaluated. Consider having it excised. ...Read more

I've had rai for thyroid cancer twice stage two just noticed a lump on my shin bone should I be concerned?

I've had rai for thyroid cancer twice stage two just noticed a lump on my shin bone should I be concerned?

Unlikely related: Hi. What was your cancer? Most likely papillary. That rarely goes to bone, and when it does, usually not lower leg. Is your stimulated thyroglobulin undetectable? Many factors here, but I would not assume a lump on your tibia is metastatic thyroid cancer. See your endocrinologist. Good luck! ...Read more

How can I treat a painful lump on shin (tibia), due to direct impact?

How can I treat a painful lump on shin (tibia), due to direct impact?

Time: It is probably a bone contusion with a hematoma. You can initially try ice within 48 hours to reduce swelling. After about 5 days, you can switch to moist heat to try to increase blood flow to area to resorb hematoma quicker. If it hurts to bear weight, be seen to make sure it is not broken. If it gets red and hot, be seen as it can get infection in it. ...Read more

12 months ago I noticed a very small lump or raise in the tibia bone. I was concerned and got an x-ray. This showed nothing. Now it has doubled size?

X-rays, MRI: I would repeat the x-rays to start with and consider an MRI or ct scan to further work this up. There are benign bone tumors that aren't harmful as well as ones to be concerned about. There are also a lot of soft tissue tumors (again many totally benign). X-rays are a good first step, but if nothing is seen on x-ray, you should consider an MRI to look at the soft tissue. ...Read more

I suffered what I thought was a deep tibia bone bruise 2 months ago and now I have multiple hard lumps I can move up and down the whole tibia bone.

Varies: When you do sustain a "bone bruise" it can affect the periosteum, which is the lining of the bone. This can result in extra bone formation and the lumps you are describing. I would not hesitate to be seen and possibly have some further studies. ...Read more

Got a small lump on my tibia two weeks ago. It moves with the skin, not attached to the bone. Causes other pain in my leg, as high as my glute.

How small?: If not attached to bone, this my be a skin cyst or small skin growth called dermatofibroma. It would be unusual for a small growth on the tibia, to cause pain going up to your glut in your buttocks. IS it red or warm? Any pain that persists deserves to be examined by a docctor. ...Read more
