Are tremors common from epival/ depakote/ valproic acid?

Are tremors common from epival/ depakote/ valproic acid?

Absolutely!: I rarely prescribe valproate as an initial anti-epileptic agent anymore (though i did years ago) since there are so many aeds (antiepileptic drugs) that just as well or better without causing so many side-effects. Tremor is one of the chief offenders. Tremor can occur even at "sub-therapeutic" blood levels. ...Read more

I take Epilim Chrono 500mg which isn't actually equal Depakote ER. (500mg Epilim = 333mg sodium valproate + 145 mg valproic acid),so when to test?

Random: The idea is this medication is supposed to generate a steady state level after about 3 days. Peak and trough levels matter if you are looking for toxicity or sub-therapeutic levels with medications with a short half life. Also Depakote has a very wide therapeutic level (50-100) Consider obtaining a Vit D level (which is often low) and checking ammonia after being on this medication a while. ...Read more

Can I take vitamin C pills (always made of sodium/potassium bicarbonate, (sodium bicarbonate) ascorbate, benzoate...) w. pulmonary hypertension requiring low sodium diet?

Can I take vitamin C pills (always made of sodium/potassium bicarbonate, (sodium bicarbonate) ascorbate, benzoate...) w. pulmonary hypertension requiring low sodium diet?

Yes, however...: I strongly advise you take Vitamin C, ideally 1000 mg 2-3x/day, but you should try to find forms without sodium. I don't know what's available in Denmark, but in the US you can find ascorbic acid, or calcium or magnesium ascorbate without sodium. Lypo-spheric Vit. C is esp. well-absorbed,but has 120 mg of sodium, but a low sodium diet usually allows 2000mg/day. Vit. C is best with bioflavonoids. ...Read more

Topamax, (topiramate) Sodium Valproate, Depakote and Lamictal, which are best for migraine aura, and which have the most side effects?

Migraine: Prophylaxis with either Topamax (topiramate) or Depakote would be considered first line aggressive therapy (for males). With Depakote (sodium divalproate) we often see weight gain and a fine tremor (especially in older adults). With Topamax (topiramate) there are more side effects (weight loss, parasthesias, change in sense of taste, inability to sweat, glaucoma, kidney stones ) www.healthtap.com/drericweisman ...Read more
