Sodium Nitrite Medication
Comprised of nitrogen & 2 oxygen molecules. Sodium nitrite is used in meat industry to prevent bacterial growth & to maintain the meat's red color (≥ 22mg/kg body weight is toxic); cooking at high heat allows nitrites to combine with Amino Acids to form nitros-amines (carcinogens). It can be converted by many pathways to nitric oxide, a potent vaso-dilator. Amyl nitrite can be ...Read more
Consumed: We consume it all the time but we don't make it. It is a useful precursor to a variety of compounds, such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, and pesticides, but it is probably best known as a food additive to prevent botulism. It has been used to keep meat safe. ...Read more
I have a UTI high in leukocytes. What medications are used to treat this type of uti? I've only had 1 UTI high in nitrite
Culture: Your doctor can send a urine culture which can tell you which bacteria is responsible and which antibiotics it's susceptible to. He or she can even start treating you empirically first with something common, like Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds until the culture results come back. If the bacteria is resistant, the antibiotic can be changed. Good luck! ...Read more
How could irritability (a mental heath effect caused by inhaling nitrite) influence dependence on the drug?
Don't understand?: Most of the time, when a drug producing 'dysphoric' effects - effects not considered pleasant by most people - fewer people abuse that drug. However, many drugs produce irritability, including cocaine and amphetamines, but people still get enough benefit to continue to use them. People use nitrites mainly for sexual enhancement, and are willing to pay the price of some stimulation/irritability. ...Read more

Uti: When both leucoyte and nitrites are positive then it is strongly indicative of uti. If only leucocyte is positive and nitrite negative, it can still be uti, but with organisms who doesn't convert to nitrite, low urine ph or early phase of uti. Vice versa also indicates UTI and if alone nitrite is pos it is still a strong predictor of uti. In all circumstances clinical signs and symptoms are imp. ...Read more

I have nitrite present in urine without any other problem (everything else normal)! no symptoms also! What causes it?
In the urinalysis I had positive nitrite as well as 500 Leu/uL. What kind of infection could that indicate?
Maybe: Leukocytes (white blood cells) are found in urine when there is any source of irritation (uti, stones, tumors...). Nitrites in urine are generally due to bacteria that make nitrites, but not all bacteria do so. The only way to be sure you have a UTI (and know how best to treat it) is to have the urine cultured, which means it is grown in a lab for 48-72hrs, then tested with several antibiotics. ...Read more
Maybe UTI, maybe not: These indicators suggest a possibility of a urinary tract infection, especially if you have burning on urination, frequency and urgency etc...Moderate bilirubin/trace protein can be from concentrated urine. I purchase nitrite-free deli ham for my daughter and I occasionally feed her those. Are these still considered a carcinogen? I am scared!
The WHO advisory...: On red/processed meats does not represent any new discoveries. We've known for decades that these are associated with slightly higher colon cancer rates. What's more important is to have a well balanced diet. Sugary foods and excess carbs are a bigger threat to our health due to the obesity and diabetes epidemic. Don't overdo the red/processed meat and follow colon CA screening guidelines. ...Read more
I took a UTI home strip test twice, both of which came out positive for leukocytes and negetive for nitrites. Does that mean I have a uti?
Possible: Not all UTIs give positive nitrite.Leukocytes could be present if urine not very cleanly collected in female (by wiping very well with antiseptic pad &labia separated).Only sure proof of infection is culture. If you did a dipstick test at home, I presume you are having symptoms. Best to see doctor & probably you will be given antibiotic probably after giving urine specimen. ...Read more
