Doctor insights on:
Sodium Bicarbonate Enema
No: Sodium bicarbonate is a symptom relief measure used in adults experiencing heartburn or reflux. Adults have kidneys that can get rid of the extra bicarbonate. Infants do not have this ability. If your child is experiencing reflux symptoms talk with your pediatrician. However, please do not give your infant sodium bicarbonate, unless you are specifically to by your doctor and in what amount.
Neutralizes acidity: Sodium bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) makes the urine less acidic. This effect helps the kidneys get rid of uric acid, thus helping to prevent gout and kidney stones. It can help the body get rid of excess amounts of certain types of medications. Bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) can also help prevent and treat certain metabolic problems (acidosis) caused by kidney disease.
Yes: Nexium (esomeprazole) is a prescription medication that counteracts the stomach's acidity. You should not need to take additional bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) to neutralize the stomach acid because the medication works well to do that. There is no contraindication to taking bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate), but it may not help more than the medication.
They shouldn't: Gout occurs when uric acid is produced often in an acidic environment. Hco3 can be used as a buffer when added to water creating more alkalinity in the blood, preventing uric acid deposition in the joints. Perhaps your bodywork was performed after trying this treatment? Using hco3 can dangerously raise your bloodpressure, so be careful.See 1 more doctor answer
Acid neutralization: I'm assuming you're asking about stomach acid, which must be buffered before proper digestion of food can take place in the small bowel. The pancreas assists with both functions--by production of bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) that neutralizes stomach acid in the material that enters the small bowel, as well as production of enzymes that work to digest starches and proteins in that ingested food.
My bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) is always low to borderline for over a year and my muscles are having issues. How do I raise it?
I believe I have non specific urethritis and have noticed a significant change in pain and discomfort since taking sodium bicarbonate. Please info?
Issues: NSU is felt to be a type of std in some circles. This may not be what you have. Would ask why you are taking Na bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate). Make sure of what you have and see a doctor or urologist. This may well be a UTI. Get the best treatment after you have had a urine culture done. Best wishes.
Last night me and my husband took a teaspoon of sodium carbonate by mistake thinking it was bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate). No side effects yet. Should we worry?
If no side effects: Sodium carbonate or soda ash is not poisonous but can be an irritant. So if you don't feel any irritation in your mouth, esophagus or stomach than you should be alright and there will be no problem.See 1 more doctor answer
Acute Gout: Sodium bicarbonate, (sodium bicarbonate) once it enters the stomach, turns into water and a carbon dioxide gas. The pH of blood is unaffected. Therefore, it has no realistic role as a treatment for gout! There are many effective strategies for acute gouty arthritis. See your rheumatologist.
It is not: Sodium bicarbonate is not a treatment for parakeratosis. You need to address the cause of this pathological observation.
Serum bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate): Bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) in our blood acts as an essentisl acid buffer. Its concentration is tightly governed and regulated between 22 and 28 meq/liter. A value of 32 indicates an excess. Why it is 32 is important. The kidney is responsible, for sure, though the kidney need not act alone. Hormone signals such as aldosterone excess can drive this change. Lung retention of carbon dioxide also can. Ask doc.
No: Drink lots of plain water, not bicarb.
