Now if it is a partial denture, it can not be attached the braces b/c then it can not be removed for hygiene. Sure .... but why?: Unless you are having ear surgery, there should be no problem with wearing a plastic retainer, for whatever reason, during surgery. If it has metal components, you may be asked to remove it to avoid the highly unlikely (but possible) chance of electrical currents used to seal blood vessels causing a burn on your ear at the site of that metal. Absolutely: Better a live chicken than a dead duck. Wear orthodontic mouthguard for all contact sports (including soccer). Your orthodontist will have one for you. Do not wear the otc warm-up kind as these prevent tooth movement, therefore no braces progress.
