Smooth Muscle (Overview)

Smooth muscle is an involuntary non-striated muscle. It is divided into two sub-groups; the single-unit (unitary) and multiunit smooth muscle. Smooth muscle is found within the walls of blood vessels. Smooth muscle is also found in lymphatic vessels, the urinary bladder, uterus, male and female reproductive tracts, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, arrector pili of skin, and other places.

Why is there a need for immunohistochemistry: smooth muscle actin after I got the diagnosis: cellular spindle cell lesion favor nodular fascitis?

To help diagnosis: Pathologists often use immunohistochemistry to help in arriving at a diagnosis. For softn tissue tumors immunohistochemistry can help better characterize the type of tumor...For example if is smooth muscle derived or a neural tumor etc. In terms of nodular fasciitis, it can morphologically appear similar to some smooth muscle tumors and some other fibroblastic tumors so ihc may be used. ...Read more

1. What percentage of the time does cidp or gb present without significant associated muscle weakness. 2. How can cidp or gb effect smooth muscle.?

See below: Commonly gbs starts with numbness and tingling that is bilateral and starting at the toes (variants of the disease differ in symptoms). Weakness has to be present for it to be gbs. Cidp is less predictable: weakness may not be present for a couple years. In these diseases peripheral nerves are stripped of myelin (the coating that allows for nerve transmission). Smooth muscle is not affected. ...Read more

Is concerta less likely going to cause smooth muscle contraction than ritalin (methylphenidate)?

Is concerta less likely going to cause smooth muscle contraction than ritalin (methylphenidate)?

No: Concerta is methylphenidate, exactly the same molecule as ritalin. Concerta is formulated to be released into your bloodstream slowly so it lasts for 6 to 8 hours with a steady blood level, whereas Ritalin is absorbed rapidly and your blood level rises to a peak in about two hours and then declines, and is active for a total of about 4 hours. Same medication - same effects. ...Read more

What is the best calcium blocker for intestine smooth muscle relaxation in achalasia?

Achalasia a name for: A behavior, not the reality of what is happening. Except for heart, no muscle cells in body contract without 0.001 sec nerve impulses to each muscle cell releasing neurotransmitter to trigger activation & contraction. Meds do not address, much less solve the real problems which are brain+neuromuscular. Since this is too complex for disease medicine, Docs focus only on aspects of end-body behavior. ...Read more

What would cause a high positive ANA (1:640) speckled, nucleolar with a low positive smooth muscle antibody (1:40) but negative SS-A, SS-B, anti-Smith, RNP, SCL-70, Anti Jo antibodies? Liver disease?

What would cause a high positive ANA (1:640) speckled, nucleolar with a low positive smooth muscle antibody (1:40) but negative SS-A, SS-B, anti-Smith, RNP, SCL-70, Anti Jo antibodies? Liver disease?

Probably normal: Many people have a positive ANA without being sick. If you also have elevated liver enzymes, a workup for autoimmune hepatitis may be continued, but if there's nothing to suggest a liver problem biochemically, I'd not be in a hurry to diagnose despite anti-smooth-muscle. ANA means nothing apart from the clinical picture. Best wishes. ...Read more

DoesPrazosin/other alpha blocks act on non-vascular smooth muscle e.g. the throat? If sudafed is alpha stim and contricts nasal, wouldn't it make sense?

Good question: Alphablockers used to treat hypertension seem to be specific for their action on arteriolar musculature as far as I can tell clinically. Sudafed constricts smooth muscle in vessel walls, but can stimulate smooth muscle in the lower urinary tract and cause urinary retention at times. A pharmacologist would be best qualified to answer your question however. ...Read more

Would a torsoplasty give me a smoother shape than a lower body lift? My abdomen, thighs and hips all have loose, sagging skin, and I have very little muscle tone in my stomach area. I've recently lost over 100 pounds, and exercise isn't tightening everyth

Wonderful: Wonderful that you have been able to lose so much weight. Your question is difficult to answer without an exam or at least photos. A lower body lift generally will improve the buttocks and upper and inner thighs and less so the abdomen. I find that the abdominal area will usually be best approached with a circumferential abdominoplasty that will also help the buttocks and upper outer thighs to some degree. Most massive weight loss patients need several operations over time to achieve the very best results. ...Read more

Muscle (Definition)

It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more
