Yes it can: Smoking can surely increase risk of gerd. It impairs lower esophageal sphincter function, increases acid secretion, and damages protective mucus membranes. It reduces salivation, which helps neutralize acid secretion when present in normal quantities. Both nicotine and smoking may be responsible, since some patch wearers also get gerd. Emphysema & alcohol worsen gerd too. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Blood in saliva. None when I cough. Diagnosed w/ GERD. Did test and lungs are fine. Quit smoking over one year ago. ?
Several thoughts: If a person has blood in saliva, but non on coughing, it suggests the blood is either coming from the gastrointestinal tract or the sinuses and nasopharyngeal area. Possibilities include bleeding gums, nose bleed, tumors in the sinuses /nasopharyngeal area. Reflux esophagitis or other lesions in the esophagus or stomach can cause blood in saliva. If it persists see ENT Dr first,If ok> GI Dr next ...Read more
Blood in saliva. Chest pain comes and goes. Quit smoking 4 years ago. No obvious cause. Have GERD. Could it be something else? Worried about cancer.
Would my barium swallow upper g.I. Have detected esophageal cancer? I've had GERD on and off forever, and just recently quit smoking. Terrified.
Maybe...: A barium swallow would detect a large tumor when it is the size to compress the esophagus. Patients with longstanding reflux symptoms should discuss endoscopy with their doctors which can discover the pre-cancerous lesion of barrett's esophagus before it becomes a tumor and monitor to prevent cancer from developing. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Quit smoking: The most obvious answer of course is that you have to stop smoking. There is no benefit from smoking, and as long as you continue to do so, you will be short of breath and have increased mucous and cough. You know this. Smoking makes asthma, GERD and COPD worse if you have them. Smoking causes other serious chronic health problems, such as cancers, stroke, heart disease. My friend is experiencing severe heartburn after smoking meth. should i take her to the hospital?
YES -- ABSOLUTELY: To quit smoking via VAPING you start by using whatever vaping liquid gets you to quit smoking completely, then, over time, switch away from tobacco flavored liquids to non-tobacco flavored liquids (very few experienced vapors use tobacco flavors) then switch to FLAVORLESS liquids (FLAVOR=RISK) containing only Glycerin and nicotine, and then taper-down the nicotine. Vaping glycerin only is safe. ...Read more

The companies say it is just water vapor. but the propellant (propylene glycol) and oils, flavorings, additives, preservatives in them is not even known with certainty (trade secrets), let alone what they do to us short-term or long-term.
