What are possible reasons that my four year old has chronic cough with mucus months after pneumonia bout?

Talk to your doctor: There are many causes of cough that lasts a long time. When it goes away in 2-3 weeks it is likely to just be an acute infection, but when it lasts for months it is more serious and needs to be checked out. Asthma, allergies, sinus infection and acid reflux can all cause on-going cough. Talk to your doctor about further testing and/or referral to a children's lung specialist. ...Read more

Is it possible for a 13 year old that has been smoking for two years to develop lung cancer?

Is it possible for a 13 year old that has been smoking for two years to develop lung cancer?

Probably not.: This would be exceedingly rare, as most lung cancer occurs in older adults with significant (i.e. Decades-long) smoking history. There would likely be a significant familial component to lung cancer that develops in a 13-year-old, regardless of whether they smoke(d) or not. ...Read more

I'am a 27 yrs old married woman. Had a nephractomy at a age of 19 days. And suffering for adpkd for last 15 yrs. What should be my normal creatinine?

I'am a 27 yrs old married woman. Had a nephractomy at a age of 19 days. And suffering for adpkd for last 15 yrs. What should be my normal creatinine?

It depends : Creatinine level depends on your kidney function as well as your muscle mass. For people not in the extremes of age/muscle mass, a normal creatinine could be anywhere from 0.6 to 1.2. However, it has to be interpreted in the light of a person's muscle mass and age. A cr of 1.2 could be "high" suggesting significant kidney dysfunction in a 90 yr old woman; but could be "normal" for a 30 yr old. ...Read more

One year old with a cough for 3 weeks, what to do?

One year old with a cough for 3 weeks, what to do?

Many conditions: There are many causes of cough, but one that lasts 3 weeks is considered prolonged. Usually cough caused by uncomplicated viral illnesses lasts 7-10 days. I would suggest an evaluation for wheezing, inflammation in the lung, a secondary infection, an ear/sinus/throat infection and other causes . Your physician may order testing such as a chest radiograph to determine the cause and to advise rx ...Read more

Lung cancer at 18 year olds? For the past two years i had a sore back/shoulder (mild), shallow breathing, a weaker voice + diagnosed with asthma

Stop smoking: That is quite a jump from asthma to cancer. Our brain thinks the worse but actually asthma can contribute to all of the reported symptoms. Treat the asthma symptoms under doctors care, find a way to stop smoking even with therapy, there are many ways. Also ask for x-ray if worry persists, lung changes would be evident. Blood work as well. Take care! ...Read more

I am a 40 yr old with stage IV COPD my fev1was 0.95 or 23%. Is that bad for my age...I smoked a pack a day for 20 years...?

Not good!: Stage IV isn't good. I suspect that you're short of breath w/any activity, possibly even at rest, given your numbers. I hope you've already quit smoking. Are you taking your medications/inhalers as directed? Inhaled corticosteroid? Long acting beta agonist? Anticholinergic? Maybe even pde4 inhibitor? Vaccinations up-to-date? Pulmonary rehab & supplementary oxygen might be helpful, too. ...Read more

About five days ago I developed a cough with mucus. I was a mild smoker for 10 years I just quit about a month ago and I'm wondering at 39 COPD?

About five days ago I developed a cough with mucus. I was a mild smoker for 10 years I just quit about a month ago and I'm wondering at 39 COPD?

Not my first thought: It is typical for mucus production to increase for a period of time after one quits smoking. The lining of the airway has cells with motorized hair-like bodies called cilia that are damaged by smoke inhalation. As they begin to "wake up" more mucus is mobilized. Minor viral infections will also transiently cause productive cough. That said, 39 is not too young for copd. ...Read more
