Probably not....: Blood-tinged sputum is typically caused by bronchitis, which is an infection in the lung airways. You could also have post-nasal drip and the blood is from the nose or sinuses. You need to quit smoking ASAP as this is contributing to inflammation in the airways which predisposes you to acute bronchitis. Black Flecks & Mucus: Coughing up black flecks is not a normal condition. It reminds me of black lung disease that is typically found in coal miners. Several thoughts: If a person has blood in saliva, but non on coughing, it suggests the blood is either coming from the gastrointestinal tract or the sinuses and nasopharyngeal area. Possibilities include bleeding gums, nose bleed, tumors in the sinuses /nasopharyngeal area. Reflux esophagitis or other lesions in the esophagus or stomach can cause blood in saliva.
