Impossible to know: How big is the burn? Have you seen a medical professional for this? And if so what treatments were recommended and have they been followed. The assessment of all wounds for appropriate healing and evidence of infection is an imperfect science but is best done by an experienced provider who can see and touch the wound - even digital images are no substitute for an "analog" exam by the doctor. What does a 1st second and third degree burn look like?

See below--: It is better to think of burns as superficial, partial thickness or full thickness--corresponding to 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree. Superficial burns are like a sunburn. Full thickness burns destroy the entire thickness of the skin and cannot heal except by scarring. Partial thickness burns, if shallow, can act like superficial burns. If deep, they will act like full thickness burns. Read more

What should a one week old third degree burn look like?

What should a one week old third degree burn look like?

It depends: A 3rd-degree burn is one that is all the way thru the skin. Unless it is very narrow, such that it can heal in from the sides, it requires surgical closure, usually a skin graft. So if the wound were known to be a 3rd-degree burn, it could have already been skin grafted by 1 week. If not, it would either be covered by tough eschar (i.e., the dead burned skin on top) or be open and raw. Read more

Can skin fully heal with a third degree burn? How long will it take?

Can skin fully heal with a third degree burn? How long will it take?

Difficult to answer-: I understand third degree means "full thickness of the skin"--- small areas of full thickness burns may heal well. But, large areas will need skin coverage by skin graft or skin flap. If a large area is allowed to heal by itself, there may be thick scars and/or contracting unstable scars. Read more

If there is no colour on the skin where I had a garlic burn is it a third degree burn? Will colour ever comeback? What can I do to get it back?

If there is no colour on the skin where I had a garlic burn is it a third degree burn? Will colour ever comeback? What can I do to get it back?

Don't worry: I have seen burns to the face from garlic before and the problem resolved with time. Try not to worry too much, with time it will improve. Try not to let the area get burnt in the sun. This won't help to bring colour back and is more likely to lead to further damage. Read more

Please explain why is a third degree burn, which destroys both epidermis and dermis considered a serious injury?

Full thickness burn: A third degree burn is one that includes all layers of the epi & dermis. The trouble? Healing. 3rd degree burns heal poorly owing to the fact that the areas which give rise to new cells are injured. 3rd degree burns heal with contractures, are prone to become infected, and often need to be excised (cut out) with skin grafts placed to allow healing.
