I have a small Bump under my skin in my neck area, it is a little discoloration. Just noticed it. Should I be worried?

Depends.: It's hard to say without looking at it. Most lumps and bumps in young people are nothing to be concerned about. Unless you have a family history of skin cancer, it is hurting you or there are other associated concerning symptoms, I would give it a few weeks and if it's worsening or not gone have someone take a look at it. Woke up with a small bump on the back of my neck and it's painful. Spent time in a hair salon where my head was in a stiff position. What could it be?

Many Possibilities: Depending on how long it's been going on, I would consider an evaluation by a spine specialist. Sometimes it could be a muscle imbalance, early onset arthritis or scoliosis. Also could be a pinched nerve/herniated disc. Either way it might be good to figure it out and get appropriate treatment. Read more

For so many years I had this very small bump on the back of my neck it feels like a pimple almost but it's under the skin. Has not changed.?

Stable skin lesion: Bumps under or within the skin have various causes. The most common are dermal nevus and cyst. In general, lesions that are unchanged for years are harmless. Be more concerned if the bump enlarges, crusts or bleeds. Diagnosis is often easy for a trained doctor but sometimes the lesion has to be surgically removed as a precaution. Read more

I hit my head last night, had a small bump. Woke up to a stiff neck. I don't have headaches or anything besides the stiff neck. Should I get it checked out?

I hit my head last night, had a small bump. Woke up to a stiff neck. I don't have headaches or anything besides the stiff neck. Should I get it checked out?

Not necessarily: In the absence of other symptoms, the wait and see approach to a stiff neck is ok. The bump is enough to explain minor muscle or connective tissue irritation contributing to the stiffness. Apply heat and get adequate rest/hydration and see if it improves. Read more

See dermatologist: Consult a dermatologist to see if the bump is a cyst, lipoma, lymph node, or other lesion. They may do a biopsy or excision to help diagnose the lesion or remove it completely. Read more

Lymph glands: The lumps on the neck are probably lymph glands reacting to infection and/or inflammation in the scalp. The scalp lumps could be infected hair follicles, psoriasis or other dermatitis, or viral lesions like shingles. Have your md check these areas if they don't resolve. Read more

Sebaceous cyst: This is a typical sebaceous cyst, perhaps a fairly large one. It's probably not infected now, and is harmless unless and until that happens. But it can be a pretty big deal if infection occurs. It can be treated with minor surgery to prevent recurrent accumulation, drainage, and infection -- probably by a dermatologist. Contact your doctor about a referral. Read more

My scalp at the nape of the neck is quite itchy and I scratch it often. This is scalp covered by my hair. It now has small bumps on the skin. Advice?

My scalp at the nape of the neck is quite itchy and I scratch it often. This is scalp covered by my hair. It now has small bumps on the skin. Advice?

Could be. ..: It very well could be a cause of more symptomatic seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, even a plain ole fungal infection. While you could try over-the-counter dandruff shampoos like neutrogena T-gel, you would be best suited by first seeing your doctor to make sure it doesn't require more aggressive treatment. Best of luck. Read more

# of possibilites.: The firm bump could be a lymph node, a sebaceous cyst, an acne cyst, among others. The area described sounds like part of the lymph node chain called posterior cervical. If you had mono recently, it may be from that and slowly should resolve. The area drains infections from several areas of face and scalp on that side. Night sweats makes me think infection. 2 months? Go for check-up & blood tests. Read more

Eneck Lump: A lump in the neck can mean many things. If it was initially a skin tag, it may represent a remanent of development that has a sinus and forms a cyst. Send a picture or have it seen. It may also be a simple abscess. Much depends upon where it is located. All the best. Read more

Probably lymph node: There are several lymph glands located within the structures of the neck & will vary in size from the size of a pea to much larger if stimulated. When stimulated they can enlarge quickly and feel tender to touch or compression. A visit with your dr during regular hours should separate the simple transient issues from those needing further tests. Read more
