Hi, my wife has a skin mole on her thigh. Over the past years it became larger. And raised. Color is brown. What could be the cause?

Most moles are fine: Fortunately, most moles or nevus are benign (not cancerous). Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can develop from existing moles or in a new area. A mole on my inner thigh has developed a bruise around the outside. The bruise is light purple. The mole is slightly raised.

Possible Biopsy: Given your age, the lesion is most likely benign but without seeing it, it is difficult to tell. It could be an unrelated bruise from minor trauma. Therefore I would make an appointment to see a dermatologist or plastic surgeon in three weeks for a biopsy. During your wait, if the bruise resolves and the mole ends up appearing exactly as it did prior to the bruise, you can consider canceling. ...Read more

BLACK MOLES: Apart from actually seeing these, it's important to know how old you are; are you male or female; and the size of most of these. Do they ever bleed and crust? Keep closer watch: Moles are common especially in fair skinned people, but they do not appear suddenly. See a dermatologist!: Any time there is a pigmented lesion (one with color), and sometimes even a non-pigmented lesion, it is necessary to have them examined by a dermatologist. The red ring could simply indicate inflammation but the fact that it may be new to you or is a changing lesion is a real indication to have this examined by a professional. ...Read more
