Slow Moving Bowels
I have very slow moving bowel and I have to take something to get movement so I can go. The stool is very long and soft when I do go, about once a week. Why can't I go more frequently?
Hard to say: Constipation (going <3 x week or with difficulty) has many causes, with diet and other medications you take playing a significant role in why you go so seldom. Discussing your medications with your doctor may help eliminate some of their side effects, boosting your fiber content and a thorough medical evaluation for things like low thyroid may shed some light as well. ...Read more
QUALITY MATTERS: When using a quality fiber, you should have a bowel movement within approximately 24 hours of its ingestion. Try using a pure psyllium husk without any additives. Quality acidophilus must either have high potency (e.g., 250 billion/tsp) or be formulated to survive stomach acid. Such products are available from professionals (not over-the-counter) where they are prescribed for medical reasons. ...Read more

Probiotic, yogurt: Taking a probiotic supplement (typically lactobacillus and saccharomyces strains) or adding yogurt with active cultures may help. Could be serious...: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it (such as colon cancer). If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber+water, miralax, (polyethylene glycol) senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... A doctor can evaluate and prescribe helpful meds too. ...Read more

Constipation: It would help to increase the volume of dietary intake, including more fiber and water. Reduce milk products. Might be your drugs: I see you list Cymbalta (duloxetine) as one of your medications- this med is known to have constipation as one of its side effects. I have been experiencing a dull pain in my lower left abdomen for two weeks. The pain is most noticeable in the evening and morning when moving bowels?
Llq pain: Pain in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen often is due to inflammation of the descending colon as seen in diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease, especially if there are associated bowel symptoms. I'm a male and have recently started having sharp, shooting pains in my rectum when my bowels are moving. I also feel pressure in my bowels and increased sensation to urinate. Any ideas?
I have not had s problem moving my bowels, until two days ago. I am regular with normal stools. In a few instances, I have difficulty eliminating. Today, after an enema I passed hard pebble like stool. Not normal amount. Thisnis rare.?
Bowel change: Since this is a change in your usual bowel pattern, it shouldn't be ignored and a colonoscopy may be in order. Your stools suggest recent constipation and if increasing fluid intake and fiber or Metamucil in your daily diet doesn't get you back to normal regularity, it's important to be evaluated by a gastroenterologist. If you haven't had a screening colonoscopy, this is a good time to get one. ...Read more

That's too long...: Doctors define constipation as stools less frequent than once every 3-4 days. If fewer, rule out metabolic causes (e.g. low thyroid or adrenal conditions), distinguish slow versus normal transit constipation, consider a primary rectal dysfunction that may be treatable with biofeedback, check for structural pathology, extrinsic impingement, or intermittent ileus (e.g. Pseudo-obstruction). Get eval. ...Read more
