Which is the most effective: lap band, gastric bypass or gastric sleeve?

Which is the most effective: lap band, gastric bypass or gastric sleeve?

Operations: In terms of ultimate weight loss, the bypass would be #1 followed closely by sleeve. The band would be a distant third. Do gastric sleeve or gastric bypass work better for losing weight?

Do gastric sleeve or gastric bypass work better for losing weight?

Both similar: The sleeve and bypass work in almost all patients. Our experience is to expect about an 80% excess body weight loss with the bypass and 70% with the sleeve. So if you weigh 250 and you are supposed to weigh 150, then you have an excess weight of 100 lbs. Most patients make their decision based on side effects or risks. Both are great. ...Read more

How are lap band and gastric bypass surgery different?

How are lap band and gastric bypass surgery different?

Malabsorption: The lap band is a device placed to make the stomach seem smaller thus allowing you to eat less and feel satisfied. With the bypass, a surgeon creates a smaller stomach by cutting which has a similar effect. Additionally, the intestines are cut and rerouted so that the upper segment is "bypassed". This decreases the absorption of food which leads to faster and relatively easier weight loss. ...Read more

How are gastric band operation and gastric bypass different?

How are gastric band operation and gastric bypass different?

Weight loss: The band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to restrict the amount of food you can consume. It is adjustable depending on the amount of food you can eat and weight loss. The bypass permanently changes the anatomy by re-routing the intestines. The sleeve gastrectomy permanently changes the size of the stomach. All work well for the right people. ...Read more

Is sleeve gatrectomy surgery safer as compared to the gastric bypass surgery?

Is sleeve gatrectomy surgery safer as compared to the gastric bypass surgery?

Sleeve gastrectomy: That's a common misconception by patients. The gastric bypass is a more complicated operation than a sleeve, but the risk of a leak is the same for either operation. In addition, if a leak occurs, it is much harder to control in a sleeve than in a bypass. There are many other pros/cons for each, but the bottom line is that the risk is about equal. For diabetes and heartburn/reflux, bypass is best. ...Read more

How effective is a gastric sleeve in losing weight?

Main difference (recovery wise, etc) between getting lap band and gastric bypass surgery?

Main difference (recovery wise, etc) between getting lap band and gastric bypass surgery?

A couple weeks: Recovery following laparoscopic banding or bypass is often less than 2 weeks. You won't be 100%, but should be able to return to a desk job in this time. For manual labor, recovery will be longer. There are many other differences which can't be fully covered in this format.
