Why am I sleeping 16hrs out of 24. I take prozac (fluoxetine).?

Why am I sleeping 16hrs out of 24. I take prozac (fluoxetine).?

Depression: There are two types of depression: one is a depletion of serotonin and Prozac is a good drug for that. The other is a depletion of norepinephrine (ne) and for that Prozac is ineffective. Frequently, but not always sleeping too much suggests that it is a ne depletion and a ne reuptake inhibitor such as wellbutrin (bupropion) is effective. See your docotor to rule out other causes and talk about a switch. ...Read more

I am 43 and experiencing palpitations especially when I lay down. They wake me out of sleep. I have anxiety and take Prozac (fluoxetine) for that but it isn't help?

Common problem: Palpitations can be a sign of all different types of heart arrhythmias. The greater majority are safe & are common to most people at one point or another. There are some palpitations that are more frequent with body position, at night, or during the onset/offset of some medications/foods, but people also tend to notice them more when they go to bed. See your PCP for evaluation & possible test. ...Read more

As I gradually weaned off Effexor (venlafaxine) XR and took Prozac to decreased Effexor (venlafaxine) xr, my sleep hasn't been the same and I get aggravated, what is this?

As I gradually weaned off Effexor (venlafaxine) XR and took Prozac to decreased Effexor (venlafaxine) xr, my sleep hasn't been the same and I get aggravated, what is this?

More data needed: Effexor (venlafaxine) xr works on more neurotransmitters than prozac. Also depending upon the dose of the Effexor (venlafaxine) xr perhaps it was tapered too fast and or the dose of Prozac was not high enough. In either event you need to discuss it with you doc. Often their are other temporary medications that can be taken prn
to get you through the switch over phase. Also the time of day that you take the meds
is important. ...Read more

First few days on 20 mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) cause drowsiness (i.E., feeling sleepy during the day despite 8-9 hours of sleep). Could this subside eventually?

Side effects usually: Subside in 1-3 weeks. If you take the medication in the morning and feel sleepy during the day, try taking it at night and see if that reduces the daytime sleepiness. If it does not subside your prescriber may reduce the dose for a while and increase later when the side effect subsides. If it becomes intolerable and does not subside then an alternative medication may be necessary. Best regards. ...Read more

I take 60mg Prozac each morning and 20-50 mg of adderall a day and 2mg of Xanax (alprazolam) at night to sleep. Xanax (alprazolam) isn't helping can I take on more 1mg tonight!

Stop the madness!: You are on major medicines from a competent physician and are asking doctors who don't know you for permission to take more meds??? Sleep is necessary for good health and disrupted sleep needs to be treated. Perhaps your meds are causing the insomnia, or stimulant drinks, or stress, or psychiatric disease itself. Call the prescriber to discuss this, and quit trying to circumvent him/her. ...Read more

Prozac (fluoxetine) 10mg/day in the morning for 2years. No sex drive and lately can't sleep at all. Plus headaches. Help?

Prozac (fluoxetine) 10mg/day in the morning for 2years. No sex drive and lately can't sleep at all. Plus headaches. Help?

A few possibilities: You didn't say why you're taking prozac (fluoxetine), (fluoxetine) but insomnia, no sex drive, & headaches could be depression (returning?). Since many people need 20 mg, perhaps your dose is low. These symptoms could also be Prozac (fluoxetine) side-effects, less likely if they arose suddenly 2 years after starting treatment. Or they may be completely unrelated to prozac (fluoxetine). It's best to ask your prescribing doctor about this. ...Read more

Day 3 on lovan (prozac) half tablet. Tired all the time, no motivation. All I want to do is sleep. I know it's too early for affects, hopeless/drained?

Keep trying: As the medication activates in your system and reaches a therapeutic level, it is a good idea to be prepared. Take several minutes a day and walk, bend, stretch and get your body in motion. Get outside. Set an appointment to attend. Get used to an increase in structure. The medication will not do these things for you. It will only give you more resources to do what is necessary. ...Read more

After my dads stroke, his dr put him on Prozac and Remeron (mirtazapine) to help him sleep! Can these 2 drugs together cause severe mood changes? What do I do?

Yes: I would not use either drug with a patient who has had a stroke, as the adverse effect profile might present in a far more intense fashion, especially suicide risks with Prosac. I personally feel uncomfortable with the approach, and recommend a visit to a geriatrician or psychiatrist to get this straightened out. ...Read more

I'm on 20mg Prozac (fluoxetine) daily & have been for 2weeks. This week I've had dreadful night sweats. Will this side effect subside? I'm not sleeping much now.

I'm on 20mg Prozac (fluoxetine) daily & have been for 2weeks. This week I've had dreadful night sweats. Will this side effect subside? I'm not sleeping much now.

Sometimes: Because of Prozac (fluoxetine) long half life (which is a measure of how long it stays in your system), side effects can appear 2weeks after starting it, as it accumulates in your system. I notice you are pregnant also, so you may want to talk w your prescriber to try reducing the Prozac (fluoxetine) if you are better. I am assuming your Doctor knows you are pregnant, if not tell him asap. Happy motherhood! ...Read more
