Yes: As long as you are getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night you are ok. Some people need less. Waking up late and not getting enough sleep can affect your daily activities and can also affect your mood. You need to adjust your sleep wake cycles. Set a time you want to wake up every morning, and get up at that time everyday regardless of what time you sleep. Don't take naps during the day. ...Read more

What to do if I could sleep all night and wake up feeling terrible. But when I sleep for 3 hours I wake up with no problem. Why?

Sleep cycles: Your answer is related to the sleep cycle. If your alarm wakes you up from sleep in the deeper parts of the cycle you will be groggy. If you awaken while in light sleep you will feel ready to go. There are products (like Fitbit) and apps that can help you analyze your cycles. Further information on sleep can be found here:

No matter whether I go to sleep at 9:30, 10, or 11, I wake up at ~4 am, and it is a feeling of "i'm done sleeping." what to do? Thanks.

Sleep: How much?: Looking at your age and comparing my own experience as an aging man your question made me smile.

As we age we often do need less sleep.

The first question I would have as your doctor would be if you feel depressed or chronically fatigued. If you do not feel rested when you awaken then there may be more of a concern.

But, if you are getting a good six hours of sleep, this may be all you need. ...Read more

Whenever I take Melatonin to help me sleep (about once every couple of months) I ALWAYS wake up during the night feeling wide awake. Why is this?

Melatonin-excess: Melatonin helps with sleep onset and is a good option if your sleep-wake cycle is misaligned with the usual sleep-wake hours, however it does not help one to remain asleep and can cause premature awakening in those who have appropriate timely melatonin production. Too much melatonin can cause anxiety, irritability, depression (all of which can cause early awakening) and rarely even hallucinations. ...Read more
