No good OTCs: 55 yo female with difficulty sleeping due to loud noise and wants to know what to mix with benadryl (diphenhydramine). First of all, benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not a good medicine to rely on for sleep. The effects only last a few hours, might help you fall asleep but won't keep you asleep. May need sleep eval: Retire & rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark & cool & use only for sex & sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. Not sure: Not sure how you define each. Sleep habits in adults are individual and body needs vary. If you dream when you sleep the amount of sleep you need tends to be less in order to fell refreshed. In general +/- 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep should be good. Judge by how you feel. It used to be so hard to wake up but now I wake up really easily. Does this mean I'm not getting into deep sleep so that's why it's easier to wake up?
Morning lark: It is not unusual for people to wake up when sunlight enters their eyes. Getting up early does not necessarily mean that you are losing deep sleep. The latter part of your night is spent largely in rem sleep. True deep sleep would be considered stage n3 sleep. This is a combination of what used to be called stage iii and four sleep. I don't believe that there is any significant correlation between getting up early and losing deep sleep which can occur even earlier in the night. As long as you're not feeling sleepy during the day there should be no problembest wishes and try to get somewhere between six and eight hours of sleep per night.
