Sleep Aids Without Diphenhydramine
I take at least 200mg of the active ingredient in Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and or sleep aids every day. At the same time. To make me sleep. Is it dangerous?
Yes!: Not being able to sleep may indicated sleep problems that can be life shortening or life threatening. The only way to know if there are serious problems is with an overnight sleep test. I encourage you to seek help.
Cab taking sleep aids containing dyphenhydramine hydrochloride have adverse effects and can it cause frequent urination?
Too much sedation: Diphenhydramine is the cause of many home and work accidents. It can cause too much sedation and problems arise when one is trying to get to life after waking up. And, yes, most sleeping pills can affect the bladder, but this common drug, Diphenhydramine is one of them.See 1 more doctor answer
What is Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (and also the anti-histamine doxylamine succinate, both sleeping aids)?
Antihistamines: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and doxylamine are antihistamines. Histamine is a chemical made in the brain which keeps you alert, so antihistamines cause the opposite effects- sedation. But they are not good as long term sleep aids. Besides improving your sleep hygiene, it may be a good idea to see a sleep medicine specialist to get to the bottom of your trouble sleeping.
Can you tell me about Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (and also the anti-histamine doxylamine succinate, both sleeping aids)?
Moderation: Doxylamine and Diphenhydramine are both available over-the-counter, both have similar anti-histamine properties, used as sleep aids to help cause drowsiness to help with sleep onset. Sleep hygiene techniques are the first step in getting better sleep. Prescription sleep aids are much better supported by evidence as effective for sleep and can be discussed with your physician if needed. Good luck!
Actually how long does 250mg of diphenhydramine sleep aid stay in system? . I'm 36 year old 200 lbs male, thanks!
??? dose: The usual dose of this medication is 25-50 mg every 6 hours. 250 mg is an overdose and should be evaluated at the ER. Assuming you meant 25mg, then it should be out of your system within 6-8 hrs; however, if for some reason you ingested 250 mg- go directly to the ER
Melatonin: My first suggestion is to practice good sleep hygiene -- keep your sleep structured, use bed for sleep and intimacy only, avoid lying in bed long periods, avoid day time napping. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone and over-the-counter supplement that can help improve sleep if taken at bedtime. It is not, and does not contain diphenhydramine. Give yourself 6-8 hours to sleep. Good luck!
Melatonin can: Be very helpful. Passion flower, valerian ; chamomile are also used.
OTC sleep agents: Common OTC sleep aids include Chamomile tea, 5-HTP, Melatonin and Valerian Root. Sleep enhancing foods include warm milk, turkey, cherries, oatmeal, bananas, wine and others. You can become accustomed to the effects of things like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and other drugs so they will no longer work but the tea and Valerian root don't seem to do that.
Is it okay for me to take 2 50mg diphenhydramine dollar general sleep aid to sleep instead of just one?
The tablet is 25 mg: The tablet you buy over the counter is 25 mg so if you want to take two of them that will be 50 mg and it is OK to do that the only way to get 50 mg benadryl (diphenhydramine) tablet is via prescription so try two tablet of 25 and see if will help you sleep or not if you want to take total of 100 mg once to try that is ok but do not make it as habit
I'm on drug court and I want to take a sleep aid because I can't sleep I have a generic sleep aid but it has diphenhydramine hci in it will this make me test positive for anything or will it be ok to take it
The: The answer dr. Johnson provided is correct. There are reports that with very high doses, Diphenhydramine has in rare cases, led to false positive drug screening for benzodiazapines. However, if this were to occur, normally the sample would be retested using a more precise test and that would clear up the confusion. It is reported that it could also trigger a false positive for pcp (but this is also very rare). Diphenhydramine is not a good choice for chronic problems with sleep. If you are in a program that requires drug testing, you might consider skipping the Diphenhydramine and working on sleep hygiene first.See 1 more doctor answer

Recently started taking 1 pill of Diphenhydramine (50mg) as a sleep aid. Is it normal for this type of pill to cause itching?
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Itching: Greetings. We often times recommend this medication as a treatment for patients who have itching. As you described, it does provide sedation which adds as a sleeping aid. As any medication, one could be sensitive to this medication and become allergic. It may be worth trying a different OTC sleep medication that does not have Diphenhydramine. Review this with your Pharmacist for confirmation.
How long would alcohol stay in your system? How long would I have to wait until I could take diphenhydramine as a sleep aid after my last drink?
Depends: Alcohol elimination depends on various factors including concomitant food consumption, other comorbidities, etc. Diphenhydramine is another sedating drug and isn't recommended to be taken with alcohol.
