So i think it's likely that other viruses can trigger the same response. ...Read more

Can hydrocortizone 1% cream be applied for fading of non-itchy rash on leg which is pityriasis rosea herald patch, on skin for almost 2 months, ?

Doubtful: Hydrocortisone is helpful for itchy or inflamed rashes. We believe that pityriasis is caused by a virus and not inflammatory. I would expect a herald patch to be accompanied by others by now. You should consider that this might be another cause such as eczema or lupus. I would recommend an examination. ...Read more

Pityriasis Rosea: Pityriasis rosea usually goes away without treatment. You can expect to have the rash about 6 to 8 weeks before it disappears. Some people have it for 2 weeks. Occasionally, it lasts longer than 8 weeks. If a patient has unbearable itching, a dermatologist may prescribe a medicine to help relieve the itch. Since the rash is caused by a virus antibiotics are not given unless secondary infection. ...Read more

I have red/pink rashes spreading from trunk to my arms and legs. No fever. Is it pityriasis rosea? There is no herald patch, or scaling. Just bumps!

More details needed: Although this is most likely from a viral infection (which may not lead to a fever) , there are many potential causes for a red rash (drug reaction etc). If the rash is improving and you are feeling ok otherwise, just keep an eye on it . If the problem fails to improve or persists >2 wks, consult a dermatologist. ...Read more

Hi! Could you tell me the difference between the symptoms of pityriasis rosea and parapsoriasis? How common is each rash and the prognosis? Thanks!

Similar appearance: The palisading variant of small-plaque parapsoriasis is particularly similar to pityriasis rosea. Several salmon-colored patches with a fine scale at the edge can occur scattered over the trunk and extremities. Large plaque parapsoriasis has larger arching appearance and is more distinct. Pityriasis rosea is more common, benign and limited to 10-20 days vs months for parapsoriasis. See derm. ...Read more

What is the best form of treatment for pityriasis rosea rash?

Time: It can take up to six weeks for the rash to resolve. It rarely recurs, does not scar and does not lead to anything else. An anti-itch bland lotion can help (e.g. Sarna). If you have a rash on your hands/feet, see your doctor because syphilis can be mistaken for pityriasis. Untreated, secondary syphilis can go underground, appear to resolve and cause much worse trouble. ...Read more

Does tanning help clear up Pityriasis Rosea? I know tanning is bad, but im suffering with this itchy rash and I dont go over board with tanning.

No: Phototherapy using UVA and UVB is used to treat various skin conditions, including pityriasis rosea in rare cases when the itch cannot be controlled by other means. However, tanning beds are not suited for this purpose as they typically emit only UVA. Phototherapy using UVA is done in a manner that quantifies dosing and may incorporate topical sensitizers that helps target the treatment. ...Read more
