It depends on where you are experiencing this problem. Most times, I find my patients have peeling around the incision site where surgical glue has been applied. This is actually the glue that is peeling off, and not the skin. Other times, the skin is peeling due to a reaction to the tape. Removing the tape and keeping the area clean and dry will help.

Yes and no: Your use of the word "excessive" implies it is not normal, and so if your concerned about it I would let your surgeon know. No: Just leave it alone. It will simply fall off on it's own. If you are worried that the skin is so dry that it may be getting cracked in certain locations (wrists or ankles in particular right after birth), try applying some vasoline or aquaphor ointment.
