8 year old daughter woke up with sinus pain, sore throat, earache, congestion. What can I give her to treat the symptoms? She is extremely healthy, has never had sinus symptoms before. No fever yet.
There are a few things you can do to treat a cold caused by an upper respiratory virus.
- voice rest - probably the best thing you can do for a sore throat and raspy voice.
- drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated
- hot tea with honey and lemon
- chicken noodle soup - our grandmas were right! Research shows that chicken noodle soup is very helpful in treating a cold.
- or just a spoon-full of honey - honey has been shown to be as effective a cough suppressant as many over the counter medications
- inhale steam from a shower or cool mist from a vaporizer
- Acetaminophen and/or Ibuprofen can help with inflammation and throat, ear and sinus pain
symptoms from a cold virus should start to improve after a few days. If it does not, of if she gets worse or has any difficulty breathing, call her doctor. You should also call her doctor if the sore throat worsens (could be strep) or if her ear pain worsens (ear infection) or for any new fevers or rash. ...Read more

Good question!: The answer is basically inflammation but what does that mean? It means that when our nasal passages are exposed to allergens, viruses, bacteria or even environmental changes (weather, altitude), the blood vessels dilate and this alone can cause mild "congestion." With infection or allergies, cells from the immune system are recruited to the area and bring water/fluid to the nasal tissues. ...Read more

Nothing!!!: There are no medications that will definitively "cure"congestion. Etiology is usually viral or allergic and treatment is usually fluids, making the child comfortable (with a cold). You can also try a decongestant but that, like tylenol, (acetaminophen) is only for symptomatic relief--meaning that the congestion will return when the decongestant wears off. An antihistamine can be used if allergy is the cause. ...Read more
