Recently had a patient with severe sinusitis whose only symptom was a bad cough. Otherwise, felt fine. ...Read more

Infection?: Try a different antihistamine, like Benadryl (diphenhydramine). If 25-50 mg of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) makes no difference, then it is not likely that your symptoms are due to allergies. There is no good evidence that mucinex is much help and it is expensive and has its own side effects, and I never recommend it. Avoid fragrances and aerosols while sick (add to irritation of respiratory tract). See MD if no better in 2-3 days. ...Read more

My baby was diagnosed with a sinus infection a week ago but now he's got runny nose and sneezing and at night canr breathe. Is he worse?

Sinus inf in baby: If your baby is owrse in the symptoms he or she is having then it probably is. You should talk to your pediatrician. My son is 9 years old has a history of sinusitis and allergies he has been up for 24 hours with sneezing and runny nose, could it be a sinus infection?

Not Benadryl (diphenhydramine): There are far better AND SAFER antihistamines which will not make him dopey. Claratin, Allegra, and Zyrtec are less expensive if you look for the generics. OTC NASACORT (triamcinolone) is more effective, can be used with antihistamine or by itself. Antibiotics are not appropriate unless there is fever and pain. ...Read more

Facial pain, fever up to 103 (fever has stopped), yellow watery nasal discharge, cough, greenish brown sputum. Sinus infection and/or bronchitis?

Possibly: Or you may be getting over a cold. As a cold improves the nasal secretions get thicker and a little yellow. If you are coughing up thick brown sputum with a deep cough I would be more concerned about a bacterial pneumonia or possibly bronchitis. Most bronchitis is viral and happens as the last part of a cold.If not improving see your doctor. ...Read more

If have a sinus infection what color is it? Mine is clear or white. But have stuffy nose, feel hot no fever, tired but not sleeping real long drainage

Sinusitis: Bacterial sinus infection generally produces yellow or green mucus and may accompany facial pain, pressure, fever and nasal obstruction. Try OTC meds for symptoms, rest & hydrate. ...Read more

3 neck glands swollen on my right side. No pain, but a lot of drainage and occasional stuffy nose. Sinus infection or viral infection?

Could be either, or?: You are correct in presuming that typically swollen lymph nodes are due to an infection nearby. Bacterial infections may be more likely to cause this than viral, but both can do it. Laryngeal/throat infection more likely to cause than higher up sinuses. Watch these glands. If they don't resolve in 2-3 weeks, have your doctor examine you. Sometimes enlarged lymph nodes are tumor, not infection. ...Read more
