Yes: The fluid from your nose runs backward into your throat. From there, it stimulates coughing or spitting. The yellow mucous with streaks of blood is from your sinuses. 2yr old has nasal mucus that went from clear to thick yellow, now it is clear w/ light yellow. Been 7 days. Sinus infection or cold? Let it run coarse?
Depends: The nasal mucous will color over time from the normal germs that live on the membrane walls. The color means less than the 2yo's pattern of daily activities. If the kid is playful. Eating normally and not bothered that it should clear on its own. If the kid's feeds are off, play is less and she is running fever, it deserves a visit. ...Read more

Post nasal drainage: Copious post nasal purulence (pus) may cause throat irritation as well as nausea. Guifenesin will thin the secretions and help expectorate pus and mucus from your sinus' and lungs. Increase water intake temporarily to the point of clear colorless urine. Nasal saline irrigations and salt water throat gargles may also help. See your physician with persistent symptoms. ...Read more

Maybe: One of the common myths about the common cold is that any yellow or green mucous means there is a bacterial infection present. All viral upper respiratory infections (colds) can make yellow mucous even without bacteria. The predominant feature is time and change. It's never possible to know exactly what is wrong with a patient unless you are face-to-face with him or her, but it does sound like you are describing upper-airway cough syndrome. This is when the lining of the nose is making too much mucous which will then drip back into the throat, occasionally irritating the vocal cords, making them spasm and induce coughing.
This condition is often treated with antihistamines like zyrtec or allegra, however, there is evidence that the older antihistamines like chlorpheniramine may be more effective, but they can also be sedating and cause side effects like dizziness, especially in older patients. Sometimes a decongestant like sudafed can also be helpful, but this is something that can be very dangerous in older patients or those with heart conditions. Nasal steroid sprays like Flonase and Nasonex (mometasone) (both prescription only) can also be helpful. Otc nasal sprays like afrin should be avoided, because while they are remarkably effective at clearing up nasal discharge, when on stops taking them, even after only a few days, the congestion can return even worse than it was.
While upper-airway cough syndrome is a benign condition that typically gets better even without medication, a cough lasting for more than 2 weeks should be evaluated by a physician. Many other much more serious conditions can present this way. Pneumonia, lung cancer, and auto-immune lung disease are just of handful of very serious conditions that could be described by your symptoms, but are impossible to diagnose without actually seeing the patient. ...Read more

Can a person have a sinus infection and not really know it? I don't have running nose, but stuffy in morning with some blood and green mucus sometimes
Sinusitis?: Without knowing exactly where the blood and green mucous is emanating from it is impossible to know if you have sinusitis. Had sinus infection/larangitis first of January. Still have a bunch of mucus in sinus cavity that won't go away. Gets thick when talking. Take?
Perfectly normal: Plus if you have allergies and fever on top of it, it just adds more fuel to the fire (sinusitis). So make sure to hydrate, drink plenty of liquids, get some rest, and time for mucus to be gone! Have a bland diet, stay off sugars, sweets of any kind as this produce more phlegm (mucus).
