The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

What HTNsive med?: The DM prob has some anti-HTNsive effect, but that does not mean it is safe to stop your anti-hypertensive med. Some Anti-HTNsive meds can only be gradually reduced, and dangerous otherwise. More info is necessary. ...Read more
Can i take my Brom-pse-dm Cough syrup with ibuprofen for headach and my anxiety medication all at the same time?
Depends...: Do you mean brom-fed dm? And what anxiety med are you taking? The brom-fed cough syrup can make you drowsy as can some anxiety meds. So, depending on which anxiety med you are taking, you do need to be careful about over-sedation by taking both of these meds at the same time. It would be ok to take the ibuprofen at the same time. Let us know exactly which meds you are taking if this is not helpful ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can i take these two medications together for my cough/congestion and allergies? Allegra (fexofenadine) d and Robitussin-DM
Depends: Just like anyone, there are causes of coughing and the cough is treated the same way. A productive cough is treated with expectorant to help with clearing of secretion, and if with allergy, treated like allergy. Bronchospasms is treated with the inhalers. If there is already co2 retention, be careful with narcotic cough suppressants to avoid severe sedation. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Honey-based: Another choice would be to use one of the honey-based cough medications. A recent study indicated that honey was as effective as many other cough preparations. Because xyrem may cause some respiratory depression, honey-based products should not contribute to any potential adverse effects. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Coridian Hbp is the only cold and cough medication I have in the house right now. Can I give this to my 8 year old?
Yes but...: if it is day and night, you can give the day pill one pill 2-3 times a day. the night pill acetaminophen dose may be too strong, but wont hurt if given once. However, best to avoid these things for kids. I give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever, pain, zyrtec (cetirizine) for runny nose, honey/lemon tea for cough. Rumor has it rubbing vicks on soles of feet then wearing socks helps cough. ...Read more

I took the cough medication Hycodan (hydrocodone) at around 7pm. Its 10:30pm, would it be ok to take nyquil?
Cough control: Hycodan (hydrocodone) can give excellent relief of cough. Unfortunately, if you are coughing again a lot after 3-4 hours, I would say the Hycodan (hydrocodone) levels are not sufficient to relieve the cough by itself. Hopefully, taking the NyQuil at that point will hopefully give you additive benefit. I would not typically take both meds together. If your cough is increasing/getting worse, see your doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is there any cough medication that I can take on Prozac? Also take Ritalin (methylphenidate) during the day
Bought some Mucinex dm today for cough and chest congestion. I also take 20mg of Lexapro (escitalopram). Drugs dot com says major interactions. Uhhhh? Can I take?
Ask pharmacist or Dr: This is very troubling indeed. And everything I've read supports what you found. Don't risk a potentially life-threatening interaction but do try to find an alternative to Lexapro (escitalopram) w/ your doctor. It's not the guaifenesin part, so you could take Mucinex pills and gargle w/ salt water for throat pain and drink honey-lemon-tea-(bit of bourbon). Sorry, but you actually may find this to work better! ...Read more
1yr10months boy; high temperature, convulsions earlier in the day, ear infection, possibly tonsillitis 2. Mild flu; blocked nose, cough. Medication?
Febrile seizures: If he has an ear infection it is due to the mucus which has backed up from the nose. You can help the problem by using salt water nose drops, a vaporizer, and bulb syringe to such up the mucus. Antibiotics such as Amoxil for the ear infection itself. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil for fever control. Warm baths when you see the temp riding rapidly or over 102 to try and prevent future seizuring. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
