Liver problems: A bilirubin of 9 can be very concerning, along with unexplained itching. These symptoms sound like a condition called cholestasis, something seen in advanced liver disease. While alcohol withdrawal can cause other symptoms, it does not cause an elevated bilirubin of 9. This blood test should be evaluated with others including the AST, ALT, Alkaline phosphatase, and GGT. Your doctor can check. ...Read more

"Liver" pain: If you are having pain on the right upper side of the abdomen in the region of the liver, it is more likely that you're having pain from the gallbladder or pancreas than from the liver itself. Cholestasis?: Thanks for clarifying. Something may be slowing the flow of bile in your liver; your direct bilirubin and GGT are just a bit high. If you're not taking any medications and your imaging studies aren't remarkable, you might be asked simply to watch this; it may simply be you. Or your physician may refer or work you up. This isn't suggestive of alcohol in the first place. ...Read more

Liver and Alcohol: This is very consistent to the damage that can be done by alcohol and how the liver can bounce back. But, abusing your liver again makes me wonder how many times you will get away with experimenting with it's health. The second set of labs after drinking for two days may very well have been too early for accuracy. The bloating and swollen liver is exactly what should be happening. ...Read more
Depends, often yes: Alcohol harms the liver in stages, and until the very end stages (cirrhosis = scarring), the damage is reversible if one stops drinking. First is alcoholic hepatitis, which can show just on lab tests, or can cause right upper abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, bloating, jaundice (yellow skin), bruising/bleeding, and hormone changes. Quitting drinking at any stage will improve health & decrease risks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
