What are the signs of autism in an infant?

What are the signs of autism in an infant?

Depends on age: Typically parents and providers start to notice signs closer to a year as they realize there have been delays in milestones and speech is not developing. Prior to that you may notice that a child prefers not to be held or does not seem to make eye contact and smile and is missing milestones. Alternately you may see an inconsolable child who does not sleep much combined with delays. Low tone also.

What causes children to walk on their tip-toes. Is that a sign of autism?

Toe-walking that: Persists > 3 months after a tot's first 10 independent steps is atypical. Drops in blood flow & oxygen, especially in late 2nd trimester can cause " tight heel cords", very mild cerebral palsy, more common in preemies. MRI & microscopic post-mortem studies of brains of people with ASD show abnormalities in areas that control motor planning & in axons that transmit signals. Other causes exist.

Is an active baby in the womb a good sign of a healthy weigjt gain for bby?

Is an active baby in the womb a good sign of a healthy weigjt gain for bby?

Not necessarily: Activity is not necessarily a sign of healthy weight gain, though it is certainly more reassuring for appropriate development. Your doctor will measure the height of your fundus at each visit, which is an indication of the baby's weight gain. You should have regular activity daily during the third trimester and if you have concerns do not hesitate to contact your provider.

My 10 week old has developed a higher pitched cry over the last few weeks. Is this a sign of autism?

Likely not: The kid likely decided that was the pitch that got your attention and decided to keep using it. Discuss it with the doc at the next routine visit. I know of no way to assess autism in a 10 wk old.
