Constipation and...: Iron supplements often cause constipation and will turn your stool black. They can also cause stomach upset and occ. Diarrhea and cramping- these tend to lessen over time. But they are usually well-tolerated. Taking vit. C with them improves absorption.
The best-absorbed form of iron is actually iron bis-glycinate so you might want to try that form. ...Read more

If so, you can usually break them in half and have one half with breakfast and the other with lunch. Drink a lot of water and eat foods that are high in fiber as iron can be constipating. You doctor may also prescribe ...Read more

How long after taking iron pills for six weeks do I recover from symptoms of severe anemia.

Can take a while: If you were severely anemic because of iron deficiency, 6 weeks of oral iron is probably not long enough. Your body will start to be able to make new red blood cells much more robustly when you start taking the iron, and many people start to feel better in a week or two. To replenish your body's iron stores, however, you may need to take iron 6 months or more. Talk with your doc for guidance. ...Read more

Why am i always very tired? I know it has to do with anemia but if i took iron pills will i stop being tired?

Possible: Fatigue is a common symptom of anemia. If you are truly anemic due to iron deficiency (there are also many other causes of anemia), repleting your iron stores through iron supplementation and diet can correct the anemia. This could cure your fatigue. The only way to know is correct your anemia, and then see how you feel. If you don't feel better after this correction, need to look for other causes. ...Read more

Additional symptoms include foggy thinking, poor hair and nail growth, itching, and restless legs. Pregnant women with low iron can have children with lower iq scores than if they had adequate iron stores. ...Read more

Anemia: Would check for food intolerences especially gluten. You can have anemia with gluten intolerence without having celiac disease. Have bad anemia. Tests show i can't absorb iron from food or pills. Are their liquid iron supplements & do you think they'd help?

Liquid wont help: If you're not absorbing from food or pills, i don't think that liquid form will help. Most likely you will need to get a shot of iron to absorb it. Check with your physician. It seems you are getting IV iron- that is another method to absorb iron. Have your doctor also look into why your iron is so low. ...Read more

I know that iron pills in SCD are useless because of rapid RBC death but what about the trait? Is iron helpful in iron def. anemia with SCT?

Production, destructi: Think of a 2 part system; one side produces something and one side destroys same thing. In SC disease the person has a hemoglobin which has enough iron but the RBC is not flexible enough so it is destroyed more readily by the body. It is not a problem with too little being made (iron deficiency) but a problem with excess destruction. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with anemia, and I've been taking iron pills (OTC) and I still feel weak and dizzy and have chest pains why is that?

Medical check up: Anemia can cause dizziness and weakness. Although iron can sometimes help you to correct the anemia, you need to have your blood checked again and find out if your hemoglobin level has increased sine you had it checked last time or not. You may need further testing if your anemia persists as the cause may be other than iron deficiency. ...Read more

Doctor my anemia is due to red blood cells destruction & any iron pills not affected in my case so what can I do to increase the number & size of this?

Depends...: Anemia due due red cell destruction does not improve with iron. If cause is immune system, prednisone may help. If cause is abnormal shape of RBCs, then SEVERE cases may benefit from splenectomy. Your hematologist is best positioned to advise you.

If you have thalassemia (causes small RBCs) folic acid helps a little, but there is no fundamentally effective treatment. ...Read more

I have itchy skin and the urge to move my legs at night due to anemia. Should i still continue with iron pills?..ive been takin it for 2 weeks..

Please see your doct: Please see your doctor to establish the iron deficiency. Blood testing should be reviewed. Begin by checking with your doctor who placed you on iron. Your soap or laundry detergent may irritate your skin--foods, ...Read more

I have a chronic yeast infection & anemia. My doc has me on iron pills & I've read that can make it worse. Can I take apo-lactoferrin to help?

Iron and yeast infec: There are numerous associations between iron supplements and yeast infections, although am not aware of any valid scientific evidence that this actually occurs. Would definitely not take apo-lactoferrin, but am certain you can find other opinions that will differ. Good luck and be careful. Stop treating yourself and listen to your doctor. ...Read more
