Mild side effects: Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is often taken as a nutritional supplement for arthritis. In several large clinical trials the side effects were mild and infrequent consisting of constipation, stomach ache, rash and hives. Since glucosamine is often made from the shells of crustaceans there is a theoretical risk of an allergic reaction for those with seafood allergies, but is rarely seen. ...Read more

Are there side effects when taking 1200mg of chondroitin sulfate, 1500mg of glucosamine and 1000mg of fish oil? (prescribed to help lubricate knee)
May raise blod sugar: There is some limited data to show elevated blood glucose levels in people with diabetes who take glucosamine and chondroitin suflate. However this does not seem to happen in people without diabetes. In general, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are very safe, but they should be stopped at least one week prior to any surgery as they may have a blood thinning effect. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What are the side effects of flex a min triple strength
vitamin Flex-A-Min Glucosamine Chondroitin Msm Tablets Triple Strength?
What's the max dosage for glucosamine and chondrotin? Is there any difference in therapeutic effect at higher dosages? Any other supplements for arth?
No max: Glucosamine and chondrotin sulfate are not drugs or a vitamin, as such there is no maximum. Usually it is derived from fish so if you have an allergy to seafood or sulfates you should not take it. Most studies use at least 500mg of each three times/week. That's not an easy question to answer because there's not a lot of research on the long-term effects of the dietary supplement called methylsulfonylmethane (MSM): MSM is formed using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), an organic form of sulfur that's also used as a dietary supplement. Animals observed for 90 days on a daily dose of MSM five to seven times greater than what's typically used in people had no serious problems. Stomach upset, diarrhea and headache have been reported in human trials of MSM lasting up to 12 weeks. However, people taking a placebo also reported similar symptoms. Since little is known about the long-term safety of MSM, it's no surprise that the efficacy also is unclear. Some studies have shown slight improvements in arthritis symptoms, but these studies were small and short term, so no definitive conclusions can be made. Although there is great interest in using MSM to treat a variety of conditions, including arthritis, more research is needed to determine its benefits and risks. ...Read more
Is taking joint supplements containing glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin harmful or has any side effects in any way, especially on the kidney or liver?
No way to tell : Unfortunately, dietary supplements are regulated as foods (as opposed to drugs). As such, they are not required to undergo the same testing (or prove their claims to be true). Also, since no third party testing of their product is required - the ingredients listed don't even have to match what is in the bottle. Wish I had a better answer ... Good luck! ...Read more
Works: Methotrexate has become the standard of first choice forra treatment but rarely results in remission, ie no one can tell if you have it including the doctor. The risk is extremely low, although you cannot use alcohol, and is not usually used if ther is preexisting liver disease. Most patients have to add several other disease modifying drugs to get better. ...Read more
Taking glucosamine chondroitin, resveraltrol, collagen, hyaluronic acid for 6 mo. Will it (or additives in it) cause harmful effect on liver?
Probably not: First of all, why are you taking these supplements? If they are high quality, pharmaceutical grade products, they will probably not cause liver damage. My advice is to seek a consultation with a physician who is familiar with vitamins and supplements and come up with a plan to maximize your health. ...Read more

Variable: Some people report considerable relief with this combination, others report no help at all. Interestingly, in dogs, relief is much more common. The only way to find out is to try it for 3 months as it may take that long. Consider adding msm to the regimen as that acts as an anti-inflamatory and can also help. As always, check with your primary care physician first. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
See below: In my opinion (and not necessarily based on any head-to-head studies), i feel that osteo bi-flex and cosamin ds are two of the highest quality glucosamine and chondrotin products. There are very few studies that demonstrate a benefit from msm, so i personally do not endorse its use. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
