What are the side-effects of IV iron? Will I have to get a port for infusions or will they use a regular IV? I'm getting them 1x/week for 8 weeks.
I'm having an iron infusion next week but had no info at all, what does it involve, how long does it take also are there side affects?
Depends: Side effects and duration of infusion depend upon the pharmacologic type of iron being infused. Older pharmacologic types were associated with allergic infusion reactions that necessitated a longer infusion. Newer pharmagologic infusions are rarely if ever associated with an infusion reaction and can be given intravenously over 15-20 minutes. ...Read more

From that time it may take 2-4 weeks to start improving. ...Read more

Not surprising: I certainly would not consider a joint effusion two weeks after an iron infusion normal, but it is not unheard of nor is it surprising. If there is some underlying reason for inflammation in the knee, such as a meniscal tear or arthritis, the iron infusion can exacerbate the pre-existing inflammation in the knee. This will cause the infusion to stick around longer. If you have other symptoms, I may seek further advice from orthopod. May need joint drained and fluid sent for analysis. ...Read more
