Shoulder instability: Due to a variety of causes, previous trauma, muscle weakness or injury. Loose ligaments are some causes. I would recommend seeing a physician to check on both vascular and nerve issues to make sure there is not lasting damage or necessary interventions. Sleep smechanics...: Sleeping on your side without any cushion between your neck and shoulder can lead to nerve impingement, which caused the numbness you have. Also, the neck muscles that connect to your shoulder are overly stressed when sleeping in that position, leading to trouble using the arm the next day.
