Been taking Diovan 80mg daily for 8yrs for my BP. Cardiologist told me not to take the meds unless my BP is above 140/90. Should I stop my meds?

Not entirely correct: Ideal BP for all is 120/80. Having said that, as u r young, and if no other co-morbidities, first line treatment for excess BP is lifestyle changes. In other words, after a concerted effort to limit your salt intake to <2000 mg/day, increasing your exercise (even waking 20-25 mins briskly) and effectuating even loss of 5 pounds of weight, BP will improve. Ask doctor: Diovan (valsartan) and Benicar are typically prescribed as once a day drugs forhigh blood pressure. It doesn't matter if you take it at night or in the morning by itself. Your doctor may want it at a specific time because of other medications or some other reason. Also they come in hct form which include a diuretic. I recommend that not be taken at night unless you like going to bathroom. Food doesn't matter. ...Read more

I have hbp and im currently taking diovan (valsartan). My ankles and feet are very swollen and i don't understand why because i take my meds everyday. Any advice?

Causes of swelling : Your feet and ankles could be swollen not because your blood pressure is high but for another reason. None of the medications you are taking contain a water pill. Sometimes you could have swelling from medication, increased salt in your diet or because of structural heart problems. I would go back to your doctor and talk about the swelling so that they can properly diagnose it. Also stop salt. ...Read more
