Should you ever use oleander plant as a topical treatment ?

Should you ever use oleander plant as a topical treatment ?

Probably not: Since all parts of the oleander plant are toxic, especially when eaten, it's probably not wise to use it topically, either, since enough may be absorbed through the skin (especially if applied to a rash) to cause problems. ...Read more

Can topical corticosteroids be used while on the Obagi Nu-Derm system? if so, at what step should it be applied?

Can topical corticosteroids be used while on the Obagi Nu-Derm system? if so, at what step should it be applied?

Yes: The idea is that HC should be used sparingly if at all. Decreasing the frequency of the retin-a portion and/or the hydroquinone portion is best & restarting more slowly. For fastest results there is a lot of redness and peeling (it looked like a blizzard under my chair) but slowing the process to make it more tolerable is the solution. Using HC too much defeats the purpose. ...Read more

Will using anti aging lotions serums and other products when you don't need them actually be worse for your skin than if you never used them? 29 male

Probably not: But there is no good answer to this except as evaluation of each specific product. Notice also that the claims for every single one of these far exceeds the actual results. It is a field dominated by dishonest hype & nonsense. ...Read more

Do topical steroids for eczema absorb into the body? I have a condition that is dramatically worsened by oral steroid use but i need eczema treatment.

Yes they do: There is definite but small absorption of topical steroids into the body. All steroid effects can be seen including elevation of sugar levels, etc but it would take a lot of topical use. It also depends on the strength of the steroid preparation that is used. ...Read more

Will thuja extract work on skin tags if mixed with water and ingested? Or do I have to apply it topically for it to work?

Will thuja extract work on skin tags if mixed with water and ingested? Or do I have to apply it topically for it to work?

Try something better: Don't drink thuja; it's cedar oil and probably bad for you; the homeopathic version is a placebo. Like other irritant oils, it's been used to take of warts (immunomodulator); i'd be very surprised if this touched a skin tag, but some of us doctors remove our own skin tags by tying a tiny thread tight around the base. ...Read more

Risky: Immune suppression is risky even in patients for whom it is indicated. It is complicated, and should be managed by an expert. What % of benzol peryoxide should be used for treating acne n scars and should it be used in cream or in lotion base for oily skin?

Varies: Different people can tolerate different strengths of benzoyl peroxide on their skin. Some people are allergic and cannot tolerate it at all. Most people can tolerate 2.5% to 3%. However, higher strengths up to 10% are more effective, especially on the back. Consult a dermatologist who will work with you to devise a safe and effective regimen personalized for your skin. ...Read more

I am very interested in the medicinal properties and uses for medical cannabis. Do you see the medicinal benefits and do you think that it would be wise to use or preventative care?

I am very interested in the medicinal properties and uses for medical cannabis. Do you see the medicinal benefits and do you think that it would be wise to use or preventative care?

Very rarely, and no: For most, cannabis use has far more risks than benefits. I've seen people become very psychotic, paranoid, and socially isolated -- with distorted perceptions that lead to life-threatening behavior. I don't see that this is "preventative" care in any way. In very rare cases of chemotherapy-induced nausea where nothing else helps, perhaps a role; rare cases of cancer-related cachexia, etc. ...Read more

I have a very good health food store with a knowledgeable owner. If she suggests a certain root or herb, can I use it safely for puncture wound of the foot?

Perhaps...: If the wound is superficial (that is, likely to heal on its own), i see no problem. If it is deeper, you probably need to be seen to make sure you don't need antibiotics to prevent a serious infection. Also, make sure your tetanus immunization is up to date. A tetanus infection can be life threatening and a tetanus booster will prevent any problems there. ...Read more
