My bellybutton itchy, wet, smell and very little pain. Was about to clean w/ a small betadine on qtip then neosporin antibiotic. Is that ok?

Yes: That's not unusual if you have not cleaned it for awhile. What you did was fine but soap and water or a little rubbing alcohol would likely have done the trick. Try to clean the area out once a week. If the antibiotic did not help, consider an anti-fungal cream. ...Read more

What can I use to treat minor scrapes for 2 month old babies? (she sratches herself and has sharp nails).Neosporin, betadine?

Vaseline / Aquaphor: I recommend using topical petrolatum ointment (vaseline or a brand named aquaphor) this is safe to use and heals scrapes and scratches quickly. Using topical neosporin or betadine increases the risk of developing an allergy later in life. You could also use coconut oil as it has antiseptic properties and will not harm your baby. ...Read more

I had a pimple on my face that I didnt pop and it just turned into a scab. It became infected. Should I put betadine followed by neosporin?

Neosporin is fine: I would just use the neosporin for 3 or 4 days. If the infected area is not improving or is worsening despite the neosporin, then you will need to be seen by a physician for potentially an oral antibiotic. ...Read more

If minor..: You are going to hear varied opinions on wound care. Treatment of a specific wound is very visually based ie. It needs to be looked at by the person treating it. In general with an avulsion, most are just partial thickness and are best treated with daily cleaning with mild soap and water, antibiotic ointment and a dressing until healed. ...Read more

Saw my doc, does not think I have cellulitis, so i need a stat dvt. What do I do until it is scheduled?

Rest: If you have leg swelling, calf pain and risk factors for DVT such as recent surgery, immobilization, clotting disorder etc, and your doc is concerned enough to rule out a dvt, best would be to avoid mobilizing too much, rest so that the clot, if present , does not move, and you could take an Aspirin daily. ...Read more

None or cultures: Cellulitis is a clinical diagnosis, which means doctors may diagnose it on history and physical exam alone. How to get rid of infected bug bites? Is neosporin strong enough, or must I see the doc?

How to get rid of infected bug bites? Is neosporin strong enough, or must I see the doc?

Don't wait too long: If you have bug bites and they are worsening, painful, draining pus -they could in fact be infected. I would see a doctor if the neosporin is not helping. Letting something as seemingly simples as bug bites get bad enough to cause infection is unwise. Have it checked out. It should be simple to treat. ...Read more

Throw away neosporin: Comparative studies show that sutured wounds heal better with vaseline (or aquaphor) than with neosporin or Bacitracin or any antibiotic. Also avoid peroxide, alcohol, iodine as these interfere with wound healing. You do not indicate the site or nature of the surgery, nor the degree of skin separation. My friends son has cellulitis, she is taking care of him. I have stage 1vaginal cancer, im taking radiation treatments. Is it safe for her to visit me?

What's the cause ?: Cellulitis is basically a visible inflammation (itis) of the skin and soft tissues (red, hot, swollen and tender) . It can be caused by many things including sunburn (radiation), trauma (sprained ankle) or poor vein circulation (stasis dermatitis). It need not be caused by bacteria. If they have repeated episodes of this, get to a wound care or vascular specialist, the diagnoses is wrong. ...Read more
