Should we treat for scabies preventively if there was a case at daycare?

Should we treat for scabies preventively if there was a case at daycare?

Not necessary: There is no evidence that treating an infection before you get an infection ever helps prevent an infection. Taking treatment is not a vaccine. In scabies avoid contact and treat if an infection presents itself. Watch for outbreaks and treat as they arise. ...Read more

You may: Clean (ie. Hot water in machine) clothes, bedding & towels you've come in contact w). There may be things like pillows that can’t go in the wash. Place them in a big plastic bag & tie it up. Not that contagious: Usually transmission requires more prolonged, closer contact. If you live with this person or have close contact, you should be treated. Even if you have no symptoms. Usually this consists of permethrin 5% cream applied to entire skin from ears to toes, washed off 8 to 24 hours later. This is often repeated 1-2 weeks later. ...Read more

Boyfriend has scabies and so does his sister and brothers. I just started itching today, no rash. Can I use the prescribed cream to prevent it?

Get treated: However consult your doctor for your own Rx as the risk of under treatment is higher if you have to share. Everyone affected should be treated at the same time and depending on how intimate the contact is, attention to linens and clothing items to disinfect them will prevent re infection. I usually recommend stuffing all items in large plastic bag for 3 days, then launder using hot water/dryer. ...Read more

Can I prevent my child from getting sick in daycare?

Can I prevent my child from getting sick in daycare?

No: Sick children around other children = more sick children. No sugar coating it really - having lots of kids around each other means that germs are spread like wild fire. Keeping healthy and eating well with plenty of rest helps to some extent, but getting illness causing germs in an young child will equal more illness. No real way around that. ...Read more

Should I put my kid in a smaller daycare to prevent her from getting the cold?

Should I put my kid in a smaller daycare to prevent her from getting the cold?

Doesn't matter much: There are several schools of thought on this. I am personally in the camp that young children will get a certain number of colds no matter what we do, given there is signficant viral activity in the world. Kids exposed to daycare get more frequent colds at first, but then develop their immunity sooner and get fewer colds later. It is a matter of timing in my mind. ...Read more

What vitamins can I give 21m old to prevent sickness/ help build immune system? She has started daycare and seems to be sick all the time.

Doesn't help: Supplements or vitamins would only be helpful if the kid was deficient in their diet. They do not "boost" anything & end up in their urine within a day.The average preschool kid will have 5-7 URI's & 2-3 episodes of diarrhea/yr. After an initial break in period, they often settle into less frequent illness. Home solo care cuts the numbers some but not by much. ...Read more

Keep him home...: He may have contracted the virus already..The incubation period is about 3-7 days (time from contact to development of disease). So, if he has been home for past week without the fever/rashes etc..Likely he does not have it. It is usually mild and often resolved in 7-10 days.
