There : There is not enough information for us to be able to answer this question. Could you please clarify where the catheter was going and what it was draining. I assume it is draining urine, and is likely in the bladder but clarifying whether this catheter went in through the penis or the abdomen would be helpful. Also, it would be helpful to know why the catheter was placed. Is the catheter new or chronic, temporary or permanent, did he recently have surgery, did he have difficulty urinating? Sorry, wish we could be more help. ...Read more

What are the chances a cut/ wound is infected if it bubbles when you put hydrogen peroxide on it?

What are the chances a cut/ wound is infected if it bubbles when you put hydrogen peroxide on it?

Not diagnostic: Most wounds will bubble with peroxide-- does not imply infection at all. Question should really be whether you should be using peroxide at all! - it tends to kill the "healing" cells, so i personally do not recommend it. ...Read more

Is it ok to use hydrogen peroxide to clean my newborns umbilical cord if its hanging off with a little yellow still inside? It also has a odor

Yes: Peroxide can be helpful if used correctly. Direct application followed by drying the area is a good way to kill staph germs and rinse the area.Peroxide turns to water as it bubbles off oxygen. If you leave it wet the area becomes soggy and interferes with the drying that needs to take place.Rubbing alcohol is also helpful and has a natural drying effect as it evaporates after application. ...Read more

My daughter has a bite on her foot. It's red and swollen with a brown dot in the middle. Put neosporin on it and don't see any pus coming out. Seems to be filled with fluid and is pretty large. Does she need to see a doctor? What can we do?

Difficult to advise: with wisdom from a distance, no photo, no dimensions (large?), no timeline, no background data. Sounds c/w an insect bite but too little information to offer much wisdom. The treatment sounds reasonable, lack of purulent discharge a good sign. Generally rupturing the blister (a body protective response) is not wise & lets in skin bacteria/potential pathogens. ...Read more

Boyfriend has a very large blister on big toe and it popped on it's own. The fluid that came out was brown. The swelling in his foot has gone down.and he can move his toes. I drained it and clean around with an alcohol swab then antibacterial soap.

So far, So Good.: It sounds like you've done all the right things. The brown could be the residue of old blood. You need to check for the signs of increasing cellulitis and infection. Things like swelling, redness, heat and pain. If the wound does not improve with your treatment than a trip to your doctor may be in order. If the sight clears, the congratulations are in order, I think. ...Read more

Cut my hand when dropping a glass of water, i cleaned it u and put bandages on it, should i be concerned or will it work out on its own?

Concerns are present: There are a number of concerns related to hand lacerations. It may need stitches to heal properly and give you return of normal function. In addition, there are a number of important structures such as nerves and tendons that are fairly superficial and are frequently injured with hand lacerations. Without a lot more information it is probably best to have it looked at. ...Read more
