Why do I find blood in my infant's diaper when she has not made a bowel movement?

Why do I find blood in my infant's diaper when she has not made a bowel movement?

Is it blood?: First, is it blood? Newborns especially can pass dark urine that when dried in a diaper can look like blood. Sometimes genuine blood can come from bloody vaginal discharge (normal in a newborn), or from a crack or fissure near the anus. Not sure what's going on? Go see the pediatrician for an exam. ...Read more

Why does diarrhea in infant/toddler make their skin red and sore? It seems to make their skin raw no matter how much diaper/Vaseline I use.

Baby skin: Their skin is just much more sensitive to the irritation from the stools. It is a challenge when they have diarrhea to keep them from having the irritation. The only answer is to put a barrier on the skin - ointments with zinc are usually the best. Good luck ...Read more

Will rubbing a pee-soaked diaper on an infant's face and/or tongue cure him of thrush and baby acne?

Will rubbing a pee-soaked diaper on an infant's face and/or tongue cure him of thrush and baby acne?

Not advisable: There is much folklore surrounding the use of urine as a cure-all, but little evidence of any benefit. Urine should be sterile and not cause disease, but there are much better treatments for both oral thrush and acne. Baby acne does not need treatment and will go away on its own. Benzoyl peroxide is far more effective for treatment of adult acne. ...Read more

My infant is showing signs of dehydration. When do I call the doctor? My baby has been ill and is having fewer wet diapers than normal. I’ve tried to give her pedialyte, but she isn’t taking much of it. At what point do I need to call her pediatrician?

My infant is showing signs of dehydration. When do I call the doctor? My baby has been ill and is having fewer wet diapers than normal. I’ve tried to give her pedialyte, but she isn’t taking much of it. At what point do I need to call her pediatrician?

Call Dr. now: Signs of dehydration include fewer wet diapers, tears and saliva that is thicker than usual. Infants may become dehydrated in just a few hours. It sounds like you've done the basics-it's time to discuss the details with your doctor. It will be much easier to treat the problem early. Good luck. ...Read more

My baby is feeding and soiling her diapers as expected, however, she is sleeping a lot. She will be 7w. Is this a sign of growth spurt?

You're lucky: A new baby that sleeps. Wow, I wish I had one of those. The baby is growing like weeds and all the enrgy is going into that. As the rate of growth slows, there will be less sleeping. Don't worry, but don't make other mothers jealous ...Read more

Have a 3 month old baby, formula feed & has had 15 dirty diaper between 2 days. Is that normal?

Have a 3 month old baby, formula feed & has had 15 dirty diaper between 2 days. Is that normal?

I assume: you mean by "dirty diaper" diapers containing stool. 7 or 8 stools per day may not be unusual, but if it is a big change from previously, you should take your baby to her pediatrician. If she is making fewer urine soaked diapers, it could mean she's dehydrated and needs prompt evaluation. ...Read more

My 6 months baby sleeps for 9 hours straight at night and wakes up with no wet diaper. . Is that ok? She feeds 5oz and goes back to sleep 3 more hours

Hard to say: Unless you use cloth, it is hard to say if they wet or not unless you weigh the diaper. Most available disposables are designed with material woven into the fabric that pulls away moisture. If concerned, a square of toilet tissue placed over the genitals will show evidence of a wet when checked. If the kid is otherwise thriving, this is probably ok. ...Read more

3 month caution: 3 months is an age where infections and dehydration may be serious, so a visit to the MD may be in order. On the upside, a few mucous stools while still feeding well is typically nothing to worry about. Kids who eat well are very rarely if ever seriously ill. ...Read more

My baby is 4mos old and every time i change his diaper its usually a poopy diaper...Is that normal? I don't think he has diarrhea

Confusing question: People do change diapers if there is poop in it. You do not indicate number/day , feeds or other factors. A breast fed kid can poop a smear every feed or a big cradle full once a week.As long as they are soft, and not more water than substance it can be normal. ...Read more
