Should I take my baby to the doctor if she has a fever over 100 degrees?

Should I take my baby to the doctor if she has a fever over 100 degrees?

Depends: Fever suggests the infant is ill but is not all that reliable in predicting the severity or danger of an illness. A better symptom to use to gauge the need for a visit is how the infant is acting. One bothersome symptom is unusual lethargy and being difficult to arouse. This requires a visit regardless of fever. By the way fever is generally defined as a rectal temperature of 100.4f or greater. ...Read more

Should i take my baby to the doctor if she has a cold?

Should i take my baby to the doctor if she has a cold?

It depends: If your baby is less than 3 months with a fever of 100.4 or greater, than yes. If your baby's cold is causing increased work of breathing, than yes. If your baby is having trouble keeping hydrated, than yes. Most "colds" involve a runny nose and cough which do not necessarily need a doctor's attention unless accompanied by other worrisome symptoms. ...Read more

Fever and what?: Fevers (temp more than100) are common in childhood. The key is what else is happening? Sore throat, ear pain, vomit, rash, etc? Focus on what else and you will determine the illness. If there is nothing else, your child is safe. Wait up to 1 week. If nothing declares, then go back to your doc for a recheck. If nothing, then some testing is warranted. Like chest rx blood count urine etc. ...Read more

Children with fever: Children with fever should be seen by a pediatrician to determine cause and if any treatment is required. At least call the pediatrician to discuss this. Teething does not cause an increase in temperature. ...Read more

My 15th month old has had a temp of 38 degrees for the past three days should I take him to the gp or let it run its course?

Activity based : If she can stand, walk, balance one one foot at a time & hop on one foot at a time all without falling down in pain; you can probably use cold compresses over the hurting area & monitor for a day or two.If not an early eval at urgent care is indicated. Most skeletal pain & stiffness will increase some up to 48h before improving, but that is the general aches.Ibuprophen should help too. ...Read more

What should I do if my toddler keeps getting the croup over and over again? She has had croup for about 3,4 times!Does it mean she might have asthma?

What should I do if my toddler keeps getting the croup over and over again? She has had croup for about 3,4 times!Does it mean she might have asthma?

Yes: Recurrent croup is likely from asthma but this needs to be evaluated by your pediatrician and/or an allergist. This condition however may subside by age 3 or 4 in a high proportion of children .Due to the small caliber of the airways in young children, making a diagnosis of asthma may be difficult. If the child has eczema and found to be allergic + pos family history, then asthma is more likely. ...Read more

Hello. : Hello. I can't diagnose your toddler's problem. However, his fever rose to 104, he is not eating, he is complaining of pain near his ribs and he has a bad cough. Is he having difficulty breathing or wheezing? There are many possible causes for this type of fever in a toddler; influenza is a common one. The american academy of family physicians recommends that 104 degree fever be evaluated by a physician. I recommend that he be seen. Take care. ...Read more

My 10 month old has a fever of 102.2 should I take him to the ER I have given infant ibuprofen its not helpin?

What other sx ?: Fever @ a 102 level is common in infants & toddlers with a wide variety of minor and some significant illnesses. I find tylenol (acetaminophen) can give comfort & take a degree off a temp, but any resolution will be the illness going thru its cycles. If baby is playing some & taking fluids well enough to wet every 6hrs, u may be able to ride this out at home. If quiet, taking poorly etc. Call in & or see the dr. ...Read more

Maybe: Infants greater than 2 months that have a temperature of 101 deg. If my 9 month old has a fever but is already on antibiotics should I let her sleep in just a diaper? With or with out blanket

Onezie: A 9mo should sleep in a diaper & onezie with a t-shirt & cap if chilly. They should not have a blanket as many infants suffocate tied up in their bed linen.Fever can actually go up if an ill child is left uncovered as the body senses the chilly room & pushes the fever up. ...Read more

My daughter has strep. Before she could get the first dose of antibiotic, she has been throwing up. Should I wait to give her the medicine or give it?

Wait: If she is currently throwing up I would just wait first. Give her a few sips of water and see if she can tolerate that. If she does then go ahead and give the antibiotic. Alternatively, you may try and just give it. If she continues to vomit then you will need an antihemetic (anti nausea medication) and perhaps she needs to be re-checked. ...Read more

My 18 year old daughter has been having a dry cough for the past 3 days. Can i give her something for this or should I just take her to the doctor.

Honey: Believe it or not, 1 tsp of honey every 4 hours is an evidence-based treatment for cough in children less that 2. Of course albuterol is typically beneficial too. So, if it is a minor cough, especially at night, cool humidified air in the bedroom and 1 tsp of honey should help. If you are worried about your child's breathing status, please seek medical care soon. ...Read more
