Should I still go to work if I have tonsillitis?

Should I still go to work if I have tonsillitis?

Depends on cause: Many people will have mild tonsillitis with common cold of flu and it would be okay to go to work, once you are beyond three days from the start of illness. However, strep throat needs to be treated immediately to avoid complications. Rarely, tonsillitis may be due to a serious infectious illness such as diphtheria which should be treated asap and you should avoid work till cleared by a doc. ...Read more

Will probiotics make zpack not work? Because im taking them together also ive been on zpack for 5 days and my tonsillitis still hasn't gone and has pus

Zpack: Zpack is not first line antibiotic for tonsillitis or in fact any actual bacterial infection in my opinion. If someone actually improves on ZPACK, they likely had a viral infection or no infection at all. The probiotic is likely to help you more than the ZPACK, in my opinion. ...Read more

22 months old have a viral tonsilitis, and on antibiotic 7 days. But her nose is still extremely stuffed. Saline drops and decong. Doesn't work at all!

Saline drops are it: If the tonsillitis is viral there is no reason for the antibiotic. Stuffiness are part of a respiratory virus and needs to resolve on its own. I know your child is uncomfortable but there is not much you can do but wait it out. The fda has warned against using decongestants in young children. You certainly know from your own experience that you can be stuffy for days when you get a cold. ...Read more

I have got tonsillitis and I have taken amoxillin but pain is still there.

I have got tonsillitis and I have taken amoxillin but pain is still there.

Not surprising: Tonsillitis can be caused frequently by a viral infection. Therefore, an antibiotic is not needed. Secondly as high as 40 to 50% of non-typable hemophilus influenza (a bacteria often causing tonsil infection) is not sensitive to amoxicillin. The correct way to treat tonsillitis is to culture the throat before treatment and determine what bacteria may be the cause and treat specifically. ...Read more

Just got over tonsillitis. Still sore?

Inconsistent: It is difficult to state that you have "just got over tonsillitis. Still sore? The two statements are inconsistent. Either you have not completely resolved your tonsillitis (if indeed that is the correct diagnosis) or it is a persistent inflammatory process in other areas of your throat. For example, the pharynx, the base of tongue, or base of your throat may still be inflamed. See a physician. ...Read more

Is it possible for strep or tonsillitis to still get worse the first day after starting antibiotics?

Possibly: Bacterial infections can worsen, even if beginning antibiotics. Sometime patients feel worse in 24 or so hours due to substances released into the body from the death of the bacteria and cell death. Antibiotics do not guarantee cure. If one is worsening after beginning antibiotics and there is concern, a phone call to the doctor may be warranted or a re-visit. Give it a chance then call. ...Read more

Diagnosed with tonsillitis Tuesday started zpack that night now Saturday and there is still swelling and white spots. Should we go in?

Wrong antibiotic: If you truly have a bacterial tonsillitis, then azythromycin (zithromax) is not a good antibiotic. If you have not had a culture of the tonsil, using any antibiotic is a leap of faith. Furthermore, if you are not allergic to penicillin, Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a better drug to chose as an empirical antibiotic. Zithromax has no effect against NTHI, a common bacterial cause of tonsillitis. Get a culture. ...Read more

Had tonsillitis tried to treat it on my own. Most pus patches went away except one. Tonsils still swollen and it's been like 3 weeks. Why won't go away?

Severe infection: Tonsils can become severely infected and may fail to respond totally to even anti-biotic therapy - that's why so many people have to have them removed. I hope you did not self-prescribe the Amoxicillin - it's not a good idea to do that and could make your health problems into the future harder to treat. See a doctor to get that last bit taken care of. ...Read more

I have tonsillitis for 5days. Taking clindamycin 300 my q8 for 24h. My fever still coming back. When does fever subside?

Need recheck: If fever persists more than 3 days after treatment initiated, you need a recheck. Several possibilities exist. You may have a resistant bacteria causing the infection and need a different medicine. The infection may be viral, even something like mono, and antibiotics won't help at all. You may also have developed a complication such as a tonsillar abcess. Regardless, if still fever, need recheck! ...Read more
