Should I Be Concerned If My Babys Head Stops Growing
Family trend?: Small heads can be a normal family trait. So can large heads. Head growth is a measure of brain growth, but is not a measure of brain function. Some babies have smaller heads but are very smart and healthy. Your pediatrician will carefully monitor growth and development. Any problems can be dealt with in an appropriate manner. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Child had 2 separate head CT scans as an infant, now healthy 6 year old. How concerned should we be about increased risk of cancer as a child?
Stop worrying...: ... And be effective. The slight increase is real but there is not a thing to do about it, and ct's that get ordered appropriately in children are worth the tiny risk. Plan for your child to have a normal life, teach him/her the social and job skills that tomorrow's competitive world will require, and create a winner rather than a worrier. ...Read more
Child had 2 head CT scans as an infant, now is a healthy 6 year old. Should we be concerned about increased risk of childhood cancer or lifetime risk?
Probably not: If you or your child's doctor are able, ask the radiology group where the ct scans were done about the dose of radiation. Higher radiation doses are associated with better resolution of the ct images, and so children's hospitals struggle with the trade off between radiation and great images. Likely your child's risk of cancer from the radiation of 2 scans is low. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Can you please tell me why it'simportant that the bones of an infant's skull not grow together too rapidly?
Shape/size preserv: There roughy 17 growth centers of the human skull that push away at each other while the skull grows in size and changes contour with age. Most head growth is finished by age 9.Premature fusion of a growth center stops the skull from enlarging in the area. This limits the volume the brain can grow into and can distort the shape of the skull.Pressure can build up causing symptoms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Too heavy: The head is heavy and little babies (0-4 months) do not yet have strong enough neck muscles to control it so it sort of falls to one side. Gets better by 4 months. Older babies often do things because they figured out they can. ...Read more
Stages: Baby heads can get pretty pointy during birth--but generally look much better even after as little as 24 - 48 hours. Some babies develop flat spots or other deformities over time related to sleep position, and sometimes to other problems like torticollis, or sometimes rare conditions. Depending on your baby's age, it might be a good idea to discuss this with your pediatrician and have an exam. ...Read more
Many issues: I think muscle, bone or visual. A kid may have a transient spasm in the trapezious (neck) muscle that may persist if not treated with therapy. There are some kids born with fusion of some neck vertebrae that have a permanent tilt. Some kids will voluntarily tilt their head because one of the eye muscles is out of balance & they see better that way. ...Read more
