Should I be concerned about forgetting to take my folic acid multiple times?

Should I be concerned about forgetting to take my folic acid multiple times?

No: We are all busy and forget to take our vitamins sometimes. However, because Folic Acid is so important for health of pregnant women and prevention of birth defects in babies, steps should be taken to remember to take it as directed. Placing vitamins out of reach of children but within view of the pregnant woman is one possible solution. Another is to use an app for reminders. Family can help, too. ...Read more

My dr told me to take folic acid about 6 weeks at least before trying to conceive. How many milligrams should I take?

1-5 mg daily orally.: I would go even further and recommend that you take folate (folic acid) 1-5 mg daily throughout your reproductive life. Women taking Folic Acid for at least 3-12 months prior to conception have decreased risk for preterm birth fetal cardiac and brain anomalies! ...Read more

Prenatal : Prenatal vitamins and Folic Acid are important to take prior to conceiving becuase they will help create a environment to maintain a healthy fetus as far as growth and development, especially the folic acid. The Folic Acid helps protect against neural tube defects. If you can't afford both i would say the Folic Acid is more important. Your doctor may actually have samples of pre-natal vitamins, they can also be bought pretty inexpensively at your local pharmacy or grocery store. The Clomid (clomiphene) is the pill that will help you ovulate and hopefully become pregnant. You can buy OPK kits online very inexpensively. A simple internet search can direct you to many sites that sell them at cost. Don't give up! best of luck. ...Read more

Should i be worried about future problems because i take Valtrex (valacyclovir) everyday? I take 500 every 12 hours. Thanks

No Worries: There is no know problems with taking maintenance valtrex (valacyclovir). It would be worse not to take it as maintenance and have reoccurring breakouts that can cause increase risk of transmission. I am not sure what the exact diagnosis is that you are taking this for, but it is wise to stay suppressed from breakouts. ...Read more

Methylfolate: Folic acid = synthetic. Methylfolate = natural. Folic acid also decreases folate receptors on cells and decreases folate binding proteins (this is bad). Avoid folic acid. Buy Solgar brand methylfolate 800 mcg or other brand. See how you feel in the am. If tired and foggy headed, take one methylfolate. Hello, my gyno advised that I should start taking Folic Acid, how many mgs should I take & can it be stand alone or should it be in a multivitamin?

Folic acid: It depends 'what' you are taking the folic acid for... If you're concerned about preventing neural tube defects in an unborn baby, then probably a large dose like 5 mg a day is helpful. Most of my patients are on 1 mg a day. Remember folic acid comes from plants that have FOLiage (leaves) - so anything green with leaves will have the natural vitamin. Check the vitamin bottle to see how much folate ...Read more

Hi
we are planning baby these days..So should I start taking folic acid and if yes then please tell me dose and brand of folic acid.
Thanks.

Yes, 5-MTHF : Yes, Folic Acid is proven to significantly reduce risk of certain serious birth defects but is important to take in the first days of pregnancy, before you know you are pregnant. One third of people can't convert Folic Acid to the active form so to be safe i advise that form, called l-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (folic acid) (5-mthf), 400-800 mcg. Good brands include nutricolgy's quatreactiv folate (folic acid). ...Read more

Should I be concerned if my prenatal vitamin has Vit A 4,000 IU? I need to take cheawables. I'm worried this is too high in Vit A to consume for baby?

Should I be concerned if my prenatal vitamin has Vit A 4,000 IU? I need to take cheawables. I'm worried this is too high in Vit A to consume for baby?

There is some: confusion about vitamin A supplements. An older (1995) study suggested that a very small number of mothers delivered babies with congenital defects if they consumed >10,000 IU of vitamin A in the first 7 weeks of pregnancy. And the beta carotene/carotenoid form, mostly from diet, is best. Target 4000-5000 IU total, 3500 in your supplement. Avoid the retinol form of vitamin A in your supplement. ...Read more

Yes!: Folic acid is recommended for women contemplating pregnancy. The recommended dose for neural tube defect prevention in pregnancy is 400 micrograms, or 0.4 mg/milligrams daily. All women thinking of pregnancy should be taking this as part of their prenatal vitamin package. Good wishes:) ...Read more

I always forget to ask my doctor about how to prevent drowning. Are there some steps I should be taking?

I always forget to ask my doctor about how to prevent drowning. Are there some steps I should be taking?

Drowning prevention: Most drownings occur in swimming pools in residential areas. The best strategy is to install appropriate fences around pools. Ask your city/county about the specific requirements. Studies have shown that the vast majority of pools in the US are not fenced! Also, there are alarms (like baby alarms) that your child can wear, which send a signal to the a base as soon as your child hits the water. ...Read more

I have taken Plan B three times within a month. What are the risks of taking it so many times? What should I expect?

I have taken Plan B three times within a month. What are the risks of taking it so many times? What should I expect?

Unpredictable: The main side effect of repeated doses of Plan B or levonorgestrel are irregular periods, especially heavier than normal or irregular bleeding or a skipped period which makes it confusing with early pregnancy. It does not prevent infection and is not as effective as being on regular birth control. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, so I recommend taking a PT. ...Read more

You should relax: Stop worrying! the average amount of time it takes women under 35 to conceive is 6 months. Generally there's no reason for concern unless you've tried for a year without success. Taking the herb rhodiola rosea enhances fertility. Women who are hypothyroid may have trouble conceiving. Keep taking folic acid- it is most important in the first weeks of pregnancy. Biotin also prevents birth defects. ...Read more
