Should Compression Stockings Be Worn To Help Cellulitis
What's the cause ?: Cellulitis is basically a visible inflammation (itis) of the skin and soft tissues (red, hot, swollen and tender) . It can be caused by many things including sunburn (radiation), trauma (sprained ankle) or poor vein circulation (stasis dermatitis). It need not be caused by bacteria. If you have repeated episodes of this, get to a wound care or vascular specialist, the diagnoses you have is wrong. ...Read more
Compression: Yes, they work but trying to figure this out by yourself may be difficult. There are dozens of companies that make stockings and the quality and reliability of the products vary greatly. Also, putting on too much (strong or tight) compression can result in great harm if your arteries are not normal. See a clinician that can direct you. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Controversial: The role of compression stockings is to help to squeeze the calf veins to improve the venous return of blood to the heart and prevent venous stasis. When ambulating, the calf muscle pump does this. When recumbent, the calf muscle pump is not working. I, therefore, feel that compression hose should be worn while sleeping to improve the venous return. A lesser compression could be used at night. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Generally yes: Unfortunately, nothing cures lymphedema. The best we can do is help to keep the swelling under better control. One of the best ways we have of doing that is with thigh high compression garments. Lymphedema drainage/massage is beneficial, as is weight control, exercise, and using non-elastic compression garments, like circaids. Absolutely: There is no harm in wearing your compression stockings while they exercise & it could prove useful. But many people find them too hot during exercise, especially the higher styles. Compression is most important when standing & sitting without movement & least beneficial when lying down or exercising (the "muscle pump" helps venous return during exercise so there is less need while exercising). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
If I wear compression stockings only at night can it sill help my varicose veins? What are a good least cumbersome kind to wear ?
Not really: At night I assume you are sleeping. The fact you would be in bed and not standing would negate the need for the compression as no gravity there.....you need the compressn hoosiery when standing to counteract gravity. Of course if you work at night and are not sleeping then that would be good time to wear them. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Not usually: I do not ask my patients to wear a compression garment once their skin graft has completely healed. Long term Tx: The conditions that led to your blood clotting are multiple and likely include problems that will never resolve such as abnormal vein lining or abnormal vein valves. My suspicion is you will need to wear high-quality compression stockings for the rest of your life to minimize the recurrence. There is no magic number regarding how long to wear socks. Prevention is prevention. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can or should you wear compression stockings when exercising? Running? Biking? Would it help with sport related injury to leg muscle or ankleinjury?
Do support or compression knee highs or socks work equally as well a support hose at preventing varicose veins? Should i wear them even at home?
Hose do not work: Data suggests that over 90% of patients who wear hose for varicose veins are either not made better or are made worse. Knee high hose are tolerated better than thigh high so i recommend those for people with chronic swelling or prior dvt. Hose will not prevent varicose veins. ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers
Are compression sleeves or bandages always used after brachioplasty? Is it always necessary to use compression after brachioplasty? Do the sleeves or bandages fit beneath regular clothing?
Not if want results: If your physician has prescribed compression stockings for you for a particular condition, then you require a certain level of pressure, measured in mmhg, to meet that goal. Unfortunately, regular pantyhose, and even over the counter "support" stockings do not meet these levels of compression, and will not provide the necessary effect. ...Read moreSee 5 more doctor answers
