Shortest Ironman Training Plan
I'm about to start training for my first marathon. I've done 3 half-marathons so far. How should I approach nutrition alongside my running training?
High protein diet: Muscle stress will be severe. Will need to enhance your protein intake. Need good intake of salt and minerals (leafy green vegetable, dried fruits, fruit/vegetable juices) with carbohydrate loading starting 2-3 d prior to a race. Carbohydrate loading for training and during runs can be very helpful. As a woman be careful of just water loading. Recommend use of gatorade-type fluids, high salt diet. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Can be: Any workout can be effective if it burns calories and improves your cardiovascular fitness. Do something you enjoy, because you need to do it long-term, not just for a short period of time. Plyometrics: If you are looking at combining cardio and weight training, you may want to consider plyometrics. A fast paced plyo program will keep heart rate up and utilizes body weight and potentially supplemental weight to build muscle mass. Just make sure that you are in good enough shape so as not to hurt yourself with the relatively high impact exercises. ...Read more
In addition to 2 hours of high intensity interval cardio and 2-3 hours of weight training a week, how effective is slimfast?
Hydrate/protien: You need a good helping, after a hard workout, of protien, slimfast has only about 9-12 max. Muscle milk has 23 grams and some protien bars have more. That with good hydration with gatorade or the like during = good. I would balance the amnt of prot against the calories that come with these choices. If use protien sup powdr b sure to read lable and understand all in it. ...Read more
Cardio and strength : With any workout program the goal is what is ultimately important. Also where you are starting out help to establish the program. Small Carb and Prot: Before exercise, if you need to eat (you don't have to), you can have about 5-10 grams of carbohydrates, with 6-12 grams of protein. For fat burning and muscle building, it's most important to have some protein and carb (10-15 gram carb and 20-30 g protein) right after work-out (within 20-30 mins) to help build muscle and burn fat. The carb will help muscles open up to muscle building. ...Read more
