What would/could cause episodes of "accidentally holding your breath" during the day while awake, alert, etc? My wife tells me I do it a lot.

Breath holding while alert has to be voluntary as our cyclical periods of inspiration and expiration are automatic unless we purposefully intervene caused by thinking of your breathing.
