Is barretts esophagus considered an inflamatory condition? Would having barrets with no displasia make CRP level high?
Barrett's esophagus is a response to chronic reflux. Esoph cells start to look like stomach or intestinal cells. Problem is there still in the esophagus. They don't resist acid etc, as well, can predispose to esoph ca (10000x nl, but only 1% barrett's cases).
Problem is sometimes pts with barrett's don't have heartburn.
Chronic and/or frequent, and/or severe sx, see your doc; consider scope. ...Read more
Possibly related: Barrett's esophagus can result from long term reflux. If reflux is severe it can irritate the vocal cords and cause hoarseness. Reflux can also cause a lot of burning and chest discomfort that can feel like rib tightness. So it is really the reflux that may cause your symptoms, not actually the Barrett's. ...Read more
Had frequent heartburn ages 22-32, lost weight & no heartburn at 35. Now no symptoms. Should I ever check for Barrett's esophagus out of caution?
Barrett's: Whether to screen for Barrett's esophagus is controversial. Some groups suggest screening patients with several risk factors for developing esophageal adenocarcinoma (eg, gastroesophageal reflux disease, age >50 years, male sex, elevated body mass index with an abdominal pattern of fat distribution). Please discuss it more with your physician. ...Read more

Is a very irregular GE junction or "z line" on endoscopy usually Barrett's esophagus? I am 4 months post Nissan & had a scope for epigastric pain, nausea, and blood. It showed an irregular z line & antral erosions only; no ulcers. Biopsies pending.
Path will tell: The pathologist will be able to give you the info based on the biopsies. Once you have those back you doctor should be able to interpret them for you ...Read more
Can acid reflux worsen by taking biotin, b12, omega 3 fish tabs. Vitamin k2, buffered vitamin c, vitamin d3 have Barrett's Esophagus and a hernia.
Possibly fish oil:
Fats including fish oil can sometimes aggravate reflux; this is less likely if taken with food.
But certain supplements are proven beneficial for reflux, esp. Melatonin. See http://www. Greenmedinfo. Com/blog/5-natural-heartburn-remedies-proven-beat-drugs

How often does chronic heartburn lead to Barrett's? Of that, how often does Barrett's lead to esophageal adenocarcinoma?
Sometimes it can...: Barretts esophagus is uncommon but does occur in small percentage of people of who have Acid reflux or GERD (<10%). Once you have Barretts disease there is a small risk of developing esophageal cancer (less than 5%). I would not worry about these issues unless your Acidity symptoms are not controllable in which case you should have upper endoscopy once every 3-5 years. But this recommend is debatabl ...Read more

I have daily acid reflux, NEG h pylori. MD said no concern. What's best treatment to prevent ulcers, stricture and barrets esophagus? Herbs? Diet?
Barrett's esophagus: Surveillance for barrett's esophagus depended on the severity of the disease. If you have no dysplasia, repeat egd in 3 years. If you have low grade dysplasia, repeat egd in 6 months (if this egd is normal, repeat egd yearly). If you have high grade dysplasia, please discuss with your GI physician for options. You need to discuss this in details and not feasible to do here. ...Read more

It is uncommon: Barrets esophagus is a rare complication of chronic GERD (Not associated with erosive esophagitis unless it is chronic and ongoing for many years.).You are advised to have Upper Endoscopy (EGD) if you have had symptoms of GERD for more than 20 years. Yearly risk of barrett's tissue turning into cancer is low, but roughly 65x likelier than in patients without barrett's. Prevention & early detection is key, & treatment of gerd is important in patients predisposed by longstanding reflux. Dysplasia in barrett's needs close follow-up, can be endoscopically destroyed ...Read more

My mom has barrets esophagus. She has diabetes, BP, thyroid. She's had kidney stones n recently hd her gall bladder removed. What food cn she eat?
That's a tough one!: I would focus mostly on her diabetes and eating appropriately for that condition - low glycemic diet with eye on weight loss if she is overweight. If her kidney stones are calcium oxalate (most common) then she should restrict oxalate (NOT CALCIUM) rich foods such as rhubarb, beets, okra, nuts, tea, chocolate, soy and spinach. See a registered dietician for livable eating plan! ...Read more
Antacids, but...: The most recent reviews I've seen indicate that there's no clearly effective treatment for barrett's itself, though the most cost-effective ways to manage the reflux that often causes it are antacids / anti-acid medicines and propping up the head of your bed on cinder blocks. Barrett's is common and your physician knows whether & how to follow you for pre-cancer, for which you get added treatment. ...Read more
