Shingles Vaccine (Overview)

The shingles vaccine protects your body from reactivation of a virus — the chickenpox (varicella-zoster) virus — that most people are exposed to during childhood. When you recover from chickenpox, the virus stays latent in your body. For unknown reasons, though, the latent virus sometimes gets reactivated years later, causing shingles. The shingles vaccine prevents this reactivation.

Shingles Vaccine: In a clinical trial involving thousands of adults 60 years old or older, zostavax reduced the risk of shingles by about half (51%) and the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia by 67%. While the vaccine was most effective in people 60-69 years old it also provided some protection for older groups. Research suggests that the shingles vaccine is effective for at least six years, but may last much longer. ...Read more

Got shingles vaccine earlier today. Neck muscles hurt now when I shake my head "no". Is this normal side effect of vaccine?

Got shingles vaccine earlier today. Neck muscles hurt now when I shake my head "no". Is this normal side effect of vaccine?

My guess is you coincidentally pulled a neck muscle - slept on it wrong, perhaps - but if the pain is significant, you should call your doctor. ...Read more
