Hives: Some people are predisposed to urticaria. You should see an allergist for further testing to see if your thyroid or an autoimmune process is playing a role. Use non-sedating oral antihistamines in higher doses to control the hives until an answer can be found. ...Read more

I have some type of a rash and its on my left side of my body. I thought they were hives but I have had them 3x's with breakouts. Shingles?

Not enough info.: It is hard to say. Rashes are such a visual thing, that it is important to get into a physician, more specifically a dermatologist, for an exam and more thorough history. The fact that is only on one side speaks to the fact it could be shingles, but to have it recur 3 separate times is quite unusual. Hives can occur randomly so this cannot be ruled out either. See a derm to answer your question. ...Read more

Can shingles and hives start off gradually or do you get them suddenly?

Shingles onset: Yes, shingles can and usually does come on over a few days. My 3yr old has been getting up to 104 fevers, rashes, and hives, what's going on?

Hard to tell: Proper assessment will require some history, an exam & possibly lab work. This could be as simple as a transient virus or a more worrisome auto-immune disorder. I would have this evaluated by the child's physician when you can arrange it. If the kid is taking fluids well & playful at least part of the time it can wait until office hours. If the kid is not, start with an urgent care center. ...Read more

Hives: Hives (urticaria) is common and sometimes you may never find the cause. Causes can be food allergies, medications, problems w your liver, infections inside the body (hepatitis, hiv, ect), or no reason is found. Best to get blood work to try to find these possible causes and treat accordingly. If nothing is found, a simple nightly dose of Atarax (hydroxyzine) (sedating) 25mg would help. ...Read more
