A strain or injury could cause this. Any past injuries to that calf? Something more concerning could be compartment syndrome. These have a great chance of recovery in a few days to a week. If not better it means the nerve must regenerate from the area of injury down. While: While a more thorough evaluation by a physician (like an orthopaedic surgeon or someone trained in sports medicine) would be more likely to give you a firm diagnosis, the history and symptoms you provide may be consistent with a tear of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. Can you detect any visible difference in the appearance of the muscles from affected to non-affected sides? Are there any other symptoms, perhaps related to your knee, that go along with this? After about 5 days, you can switch to moist heat to try to increase blood flow to area to resorb hematoma quicker. If it hurts to bear weight, be seen to make sure it is not broken.
