After playing football a month ago, I have developed a painful lump just above my shin. Each week I play it seems to get more and more painful.

Shin splints: This could be shin splints if it is mostly in the front along the bone with small amount radiating into the muscle. If the majority of pain is in the muscle, this could be other things. A strain or injury could cause this. Any past injuries to that calf? Something more concerning could be compartment syndrome. While: While a more thorough evaluation by a physician (like an orthopaedic surgeon or someone trained in sports medicine) would be more likely to give you a firm diagnosis, the history and symptoms you provide may be consistent with a tear of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. Can you detect any visible difference in the appearance of the muscles from affected to non-affected sides? Are there any other symptoms, perhaps related to your knee, that go along with this? Time: It is probably a bone contusion with a hematoma. You can initially try ice within 48 hours to reduce swelling. After about 5 days, you can switch to moist heat to try to increase blood flow to area to resorb hematoma quicker. If it hurts to bear weight, be seen to make sure it is not broken.
