Doctor insights on:
I have tightness in my leg under the calf when I am walking or exercising I work out 6 days a week with shawn t and I think I may haved pulled or strained my muscle, what should I do?
I: I agree that if you are able to walk, you may have a simple strain/sprain. However, I do not think that you need to see an orthopedic surgeon because of a sprain after 7 days. You see one when surgery needs to be done. An evaluation by a qualified primary care physician will be the first place to start. A good physician will know if this is a sprain/strain/tear/clot/etc and if surgery is needed and will make a referral to a good pain specialist if it is non surgical or a good orthopedic surgeon if it is surgical. ...Read more
I'm shawn. Lately I've been having these sharp pains all over my body, red bumps on my chest and arms and slight trouble breathing at times please help?
10 year-old with muscle weakness and pain our son (shawn) had a probe placed into his thigh several weeks ago and the doctor confirmed myopathy. Since that test, shawn has had a muscle biopsy procedure at the hospital (thigh). The results showed no signs
Your: Your son probably does have a myopathy. The problem with a muscle biopsy is that the piece of tissue taken out is very small and may miss affected muscle. Your doctor has probably done a CPK test. This is a blood test that measures an enzyme released when muscle is damaged. There are also special stains that are used to look for different causes of myopathy on biopsy material. There is a dry blood spot test that looks for acid maltase deficiency that can present with muscle weakness and pain. The testing is paid for by the company that makes an enzyme replacement therapy for it. I hope this gets sorted out for you soon. ...Read more

That's a rare one: I believe the disease can vary a lot. I have never personally seen a case. Evc can cause cleft palate and cleft lip. It also can cause teeth to be misshapen missing or in the wrong spots. Sometimes it will delay development and sometimes it will cause early eruption. Hope that helps. Nih will probably be the best source of info since it is so rare. ...Read more

Need to see actual: Value. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the test is usually in the best position to do that. For the past 2 years my absolute lymphs have shown an elevation of 4.1 but everything else has been in normal range. What could this be?
It's just you: If they're normally formed, don't give it another thought. The usual reference range is up to around 3.5, and you know that these are set so that a few percent of healthies will fall outside on either end. I'm betting that's you. Be glad for good health and best wishes. ...Read more
I work really hard to stay in shape and eat right. Now I have a diagnosis of brucellosis. What else can I do so that it doesn't affect my overall health?
Be sure of dx: I am going to assume that the diagnosis has been made by a real culture and/or rising IgM titers, and not by a charlatan's phony laboratory (there are a few of these). City folk get brucellosis from "healthy unpasteurized" dairy products. Try to figure out how you got it and who else might be at risk. ...Read more

Improve dysthymia: You might look at seligman's book learned optimism, to identify ways of changing your thinking that would improve your baseline moods. A psychotherapist can also help you with that. Psychologists, social workers, masters' level nurses, licensed professional counselors and pastoral counselors do this as well as psychiatrists. ...Read more
Is there anyway I can heal after shave vaginal scrapes and cuts? I'm trying neosporin but is there anything else?
Treatment of Cuts:
Moist skin heals fastest because the task of healing a wound requires the activity of cels. Cells cannot function in a dry environment. They need moisture to do their repair work.
As the wound dries out, it begins to crust, forming a scab causing the cells to work harder to repair the injury. The key to healing a cut is maintaining the right amount of moisture. Keeping the cut covered. ...Read more

I work really hard to stay in shape and eat right. Now I have a diagnosis of neuropathy. What else can I do so that it doesn't affect my overall health?

Allergy?: If an itchy rash is the shape of a sports bra, and the rash is going away, it might have been an allergy to something in the bra, a heat rash from sweating under the bra, or something along those lines. If the rash is resolving, trying some Hydrocortisone otc cream 2-3 times a day for 3-4 days usually helps with symptoms. A doctor should evaluate if symptoms persist or recur. ...Read more
I have done scan and X-ray all showed that I have no problem but I still have this backpain. What could be the cause? What else can I do?
Scan: Do you mean you had an MRI scan? Some people will have a ct scan, which is still not terribly sensitive in picking up causes for back pain like an MRI is. If you have had a normal MRI of the area of the spine that is hurting, we start thinking of pain generators outside the musculoskeletal skeletal system like a kidney stone, aneurysm or an infection. ...Read more
