Anything is possible: Iud's can cause some crampiness just due to uterine irritation, especially in the 1st few weeks after insertion. A visit to your obgyn can ensure that it is in the correct position. Otherwise, iud's in general and Mirena (levonorgestrel) are nto known for causing severe abdominal pain. See your doctor: When an iud is placed, its strings are left 1-2 cm protruding from the cervix so that you can feel them and be assured that the iud is still in place. If you cannot feel the strings, you should see your doctor to confirm the placement of the iud. Many causes: Chronic lower abdominal pain can have many causes. If it started when the Mirena (levonorgestrel) was inserted that could be the culprit. It also could be due to a back or musculoskeletal problem. The bladder is another possible cause. Pain: Mirena (levonorgestrel) typically causes no pain if placed correctly but if your pain started soon after the placement of mirena, (levonorgestrel) then there is a chance of it causing it. No periods is common with mirena, (levonorgestrel) though, but that should not be causing pain. Of you had your iud for over a year without problems I would investigate other causes such as an ovarian cyst.
