Does not sound good: Chronic hypertension increases risks for heart attack and stroke via atherosclerosis which damages the vessel wall and possibily cause anerysm--see pic here. When we get sick--bad cold, sinus/ear infection can cause headaches, especially with coughing. But you mentioned nothing else and so I am a bit concerned. Yesterday, i got a sudden sharp pain on the left side of my head, then a hot flash. Now a dull pain comes and goes. Sometimes worse when laying down.

Needs to be checked: You can take over the counter pain meds but if the pain persists you need to be checked by your doctor.The type of pain in the head can be due to many causes and if the pain persists you have to find the cause. Get it checked out: There are a few things that could cause this type of symptom. Arteries can get inflamed, (arteritis) which would cause the pain, you could be wearing glasses or a hat too long which may cause the numbness.
