Does not sound good: Chronic hypertension increases risks for heart attack and stroke via atherosclerosis which damages the vessel wall and possibily cause anerysm--see pic here. When we get sick--bad cold, sinus/ear infection can cause headaches, especially with coughing. But you mentioned nothing else and so I am a bit concerned. Yesterday, I got a sudden sharp pain on the left side of my head, then a hot flash. Now a dull pain comes and goes. Sometimes worse when laying down.

Needs to be checked: You can take over the counter pain meds but if the pain persists you need to be checked by your doctor. Get it checked out: There are a few things that could cause this type of symptom. Arteries can get inflamed, (arteritis) which would cause the pain, you could be wearing glasses or a hat too long which may cause the numbness.
